turbo and non turbo head

ok i have a friend that has a 1st gen 6 bolt non turbo and was thinkin of puting a turbo head on it and can he do this if he plugs the turbo feed lines off and puts the non turbo cams in it? also i read in my repair manual that the turbo valves are bigger is this true
 
If you plug the turbo oil feed line the 6-bolt turbo head will go onto a 6-bolt block perfectly. Leaving in the turbo cams will give you a little more horsepower (8-12). With a free flowing exhaust system and a good intake system the cams will be helpful when the engine is flowing more LBS/MIN.

no. the non turbo cams are better.

the heads are exatly the same,,they both have the turbo oil ports,etc. just take the plug out of the n/t head and put it in the turbo head,,so it dont leak.

if he is wanting to do this justy because he thinks the turbo head is better,,then DO NOT,there the same ,exept for cams.

and the N/T & TURBO valves ,are the same size ,etc

(N/T= non turbo)
 
A short 10mm x 1.25 bolt with a copper washer is all that is needed to take care of the oil supply bolt for the turbo that is found on a turbo head. Other than that, the heads are identical.

Keep the non-turbo cams in the head you're using on the non-turbo engine. The turbo exhaust cam is designed to be used on cars with added restriction to the exhaust system (the turbocharger). If you use the turbo exhaust cam on a highly-modded non-turbo engine, there's a good chance you'll see gains way at the top of the RPM range but you'll lose low-end torque. For a daily driver, this isn't a good idea.
 
i was just wondering on the valve size cause im pretty sure my chiltion repair manual says there different sizes but ill have to look at that again and another question is are the timming belts the same cause he said the part numbers are different for the turbo than for the non turbo
 
ok kool he just had this in mind in case hes has head problems he has some spare turbo heads and he wanted to now if he had a use for them of if he should get rid of them..... thanks for the info

No you are wrong, I know for a FACT that using 1993-1994 M/T turbo intake and exhaust cams will make more power in a N/T application. How? I dynoed a customers car after a slight ported and polish with 93-94 turbo cams and it made 24 HP across most (1200-7000) of the power range . Sorry I do not have a copy of the graph but here are some "figures" that explain why it will make more power.



All 4g63 n/t cams are the same, 252/244 duration, (advertised duration) and 1993-1994 turbo m/t cams had 252/252 duration and the slightly higher lift on both cams. All 244 duration cams have less lift than 252 duration cams. The m/t intake cam has the same duration as the N/T cam but is 5 degrees more advanced. The farther advanced intake cam will increase valve overlap increasing low end/mid range torque, power. The extra lift and duration of the turbo cams help give the higher RPM's more air flow. This set up does not sacrifice low or high range airflow.
 
so if i was to put a set of turbo cams in my1992.5 6 bolt non turbo i would gain some power
 
Yes if you put turbo cams in the engine will make more power, the best way to optimize the benefits of the cams extra lift and duration would be to have a good air intake and a free flowing exhaust system. What is the year of the car the turbo head is coming off of? The best set of cams come off of a M/T 93-94 turbo engine, but to swap on a head between these years the head will be 7 bolt, 7 bolt heads use 11mm head bolts while 6 bolt heads use 12mm head bolts. If it is a 7 bolt head you can just drill out the holes to fit the new bolts. The cams from a 90 M/T turbo are the worst but still are better than the N/T cams.
