I am having issues with my car that sometimes the car starts with rough idle and sometimes not, when driving around with the rough idle the CEL comes on, when lucky and the car starts with no rough idle the CEL goes out.

I try to scan the car with my OBD2 scanner but I am only getting "Communication Failure with ECU"

The cigarette fuse is all good.

That's where I'd start too. Check pin 16 on the OBD2 connector for battery voltage.

Thanks for the replies! Just found my lost multimeter so I will try and read the voltage and the room lamp fuse.

Thanks for the diagrams

You guys aren't taking into account he's got an Euro GS. Yes, they still have US-spec OBD2 protocols from 1996 and up, however it is much more picky and very rarely works with most scanners. On my '96 GS I was only able to connect through a blue ELM327 (blue) OBD reader paired with my NOKIA Lumia (windows phone) and running "OBD Auto Doctor". Coincidentally that is also the only setup that reads my Canadian spec Talon. Neither my iPhone nor other OBD readers manage to connect properly with these cars, and OBD Auto Doctor seems to be a good software that establishes connection.

Rydsei, see if you can try that combination first; someone around you is bound to have either an old Windows or Android phone. And the blue ELM reader is no more than 5-7 euros.

The diagrams are from the Euro model manuals that are on the web...

Thank you very much for this info, I suspected it might have to do with mine being Euro GS. I think mine OBDII reader is mostly designed for VAG cars, it literally says scan VAG but says it can scan any car too. Luckily I do have an android so I will try and get one of these ELM327.

Thanks again guys for the help, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

P.S Tested the OBDII anyways and the voltage is all good.

Sorry Steve, yes you've got the EU diagram on there. But still, very rarely do these give issues in terms of the immobiliser. Most often it's a case of mismatched scanner and software/phone being used.

Ryds you may be able to hack your VAG scanner by soldering a short wire between two pins, I believe they were 1 and 4. That's what I did on a cheap VAG cable and I made it work for Evoscan on a VR-4 (no reflashing but reads everything!). It's a poor man's tactrix cable basically.

Hi Rydsei.

Did you solve this problem?
I also live in Stockholm and just bought a eclipse GS.
