hey whats i was just wondering if anyone has this or know someone who has it....my question is do u lose any top end with the center spool......i did a search already on it and there was no discussion about losing top end
 
No, you won't lose top end. You will lose drivetrain parts.

its not so much a street car anymore
 
and im not gonna lose any top end even tho the spool makes the power to the wheels 50/50 isnt 50% of the power going to the rear wheels gonna make more drivetrain power lose
 
It's 50/50 regardless under normal driving. All the spool does, is force it to be 50/50 NO MATTER WHAT. Hence why you break things.


If it's a strip only car, go for it. Just have fun trying to drive it on the street. :thumb:
 
Actually, it is a bit more complicated than that… 50/50 torque split does NOT actually mean that you have 50% of torque going to the front and 50% of torque going to the rear ALL THE TIME. It all depends on weight transfer and traction.

Let me give you an extreme example. Lets say my AWD VCE equipped DSM was to pull a wheelie, most people would say that 50% of torque is going to the front wheels, but with no resistance on those wheels, it ends up being 0% of torque (I am neglecting drivetrain losses for the sake of the argument) and 100% of torque ends up going the rear wheels!

The same thing, but to a lesser extent, happens when you just lose traction during AWD launch, as weight transfers to rear, front wheels spin. Lets say that they lose 30% torque due to this loss of traction, that means that rear wheels are now getting 70% of torque. And our rear drivetrain does not like seeing that much torque (especially if you add any wheel hop to it), so you end up with broken transfer case and rear axles.

On the other hand, if you still have your working viscous coupling, that thing is no match to a 400+ hp DSM. You can treat your center diff as “open”, at that point. So once front tires lose traction, MORE torque transfers to the front. Not an ideal situation for launching, but much better if you want to preserve rear end parts :).

But aside from torque, wheel hop is the real drivetrain parts killer. That is why can still snap your rear axle (usually DS axle is the one to go) and transfer case while using your stock VC.

If you are at all questioning locking your center diff (be it by installing a spool or welding it), you might want to do it first with a VCE to test things out. Installing a VCE only takes 30-45min (or less, once you get good at it).
