I bought a race trans from a guy and during assembly I have ran into a problem with the bearing race housing not bolting on because the center diff bearing is hitting the race prematurely. I can see that the center diff looks as if it is sitting crooked. I took it back down and notice the TRE spool in the center diff is loose, this does not seem right. I did not install the spool, the trans already had it in it when I received it. The spool can wiggle side to side slightly also in and out. I am assuming this is not correct. Has anyone else seem this problem? I would try tightening the hold-in bolts but they are welded because it is the early style spool which has a history of having the bolts back out causing you know what ;) So should I just try cutting the welds and tightening the bolts and recentering the spool? It seems like the only logical thing right LOL Any ideas are appreciated. Thanx in advance!

Revision to this, upon further diagnosis it appears the whole ctr diff is sitting too low in the case causing it to rest on second gear which is what is causing it to shift the one way. Has anyone else seen this problem? There are no shims available for the bearing or race on the ctr diff (closest to the engine). The shim available is only for the race on the outer end of the trans (near the end of the trans). What could be causing this?

Have you checked to see if your intermediate shaft inner bearing race is fully seated in the bellhousing? Inspected and confirmed that you have the proper tapered roller bearing on the inner center diffferential location?

Center Diff Inner Bearing Part Number: NSK R41-1g
Center Diff Inner Bearing Race Part Number: NSK R41-1g
Entire Assembly Mitsu Part Number: MD727860

As well, you have confirmed that you are not using the wrong year center diff case with your gearset?

Something is fishy, and I would need alot more pictures and details to give you a definitive answer.

As for the center diff spool, grind off the welds and disassemble it.
