Transmission Will Not Shift

I have 90' Laser that I just recently put a Junk Yard Engine in( the old timing belt snapped and messed up the pistons). My problem is this Park - Neutral - Reverse all work correctly and Drive would even seem to as well but drive wont shift through gears its almost like it is stuck in third gear. Ive tried to down shift into the 2nd gear or into low gear and it makes no difference. When I first accelearate it takes an obsurd amount of time and gas to get going but once up to 40 or 50 all seems well. If anyone has any ideas they would be most appricieated. The transmission fluid has been checked and filled, and I am completely stumped.

I had a gen2 eclipse that was an auto and did that ...after having thr tranny ripped out rebuillt put back in it still did it...well it was some stupid ass lil coil that ran like 90 bux i think it was or something around there that shift the thing....i dont know if it is the same for the 1g's but that is all that was wrong with mine...

Does the trans make any kind of sounds? Like perhaps a high pitched whine, at idle in park? If so the pickup filter could be clogged, reducing the hydraulic pressure in the trans causing your problem.

It doesn't whine or make any wierd sounds but it does sputter a little bit when first starting and then when putting into park. This may be attributed to the timing being off though.

If thats the case check in the area of the Torque Converter. Could be a bad converter, stall check it and see what rpm its at.

The TCU went into limp mode. There is a problem with the electonics of the tranny or the TCU.

i have the same problem happend last night had to drive home at about 30 mph ,the problem was i was about 2 hours away from home so ended up taking me about 3-4 hours to get home.. , the problem i have is that it dosent seem to shift up or when it does it seems to imediatly slip out of gear.
