Will not shift into fifth and reverse

So after replacing the shifter bushings I have a new problem. The car suddenly won't shift into 5th or reverse. It's strange though, it's as if the gears were shifted over one position. When I put the stick to were 3rd should be, I'm actually in 1st. When I but the stick to where reverse should be, the car is in 4th. It physically will not move over to the 1st and second positions. However, when I disconnect the linkages they move around perfectly.

Any ideas?

Sounds like you need to adjust your cables sir!

If the cable casings are clamped down on tranny and cables adjusted (1g only), then see if the shift select lever shoe is excessively worn: http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/97-gs-t-fifth-gear-grinding-help.376341/#post-152266167

I'm with the other two comments. The cable that controls the back and forth --- has something wrong with it. Check over that cable and where it mounts to that stabilizing bracket on the trans. I bet you'll find it without too many problems.

Its the "side to side" cable that needs adjusting. Needs to be adjusted longer. Sounds like OP has an extreme case here. I'll bet something else is wrong as well.
