I think I have a transmission problem.

I have a rattling/grinding noise coming from what sounds like front right of the car only when coasting. The wheel bearings are good and the cv joints have no play.

When I had the front right raised up I started it to pressurize brakes and the rattling noise was loud when the clutch was up. When I pressed it down the noise went away. After I lowered the car back down it didn't do this.

It's a 95 gst and had a new clutch 25 K miles ago so I would hate to have to pull the trans ti fix something.

What's wrong?

I think you may have the same problem I do with the trans that is coming out of my car. I think the all tests have led to me believing the input shaft bearing is shot. I can let it idle and while in neutral with the clutch up (engaged) I get a sound of marbles rolling around it shifts just fine and everything but the sound is annoying! As soon as I push the clutch down (disengaged) it goes away. Sometimes I don't hear it unless I rev it up a little bit in neutral.

A lot of people will probably tell you to check the Throw Out Bearing but generally they make noise with the clutch pedal up (engaged) and with light pedal pressure it goes away. Mine you have to fully disengage the clutch for it to go away. Not typical of TOB failure. If your trans still shifts fine and you are mechanically inclined I would look at the transmission rebuild VFAQ and try replacing the bearings yourself. If you have a press or access to one it's really not that hard. Plus, bearings are about $25 a piece.

THANKS!

Yeah you described my problem exactly. Also the cv joints have no play, but I can move the axle a little where it goes into the trans. So it looks like the tapered roler bearings on the input shaft are shot.

How long did you drive yours for with the problem?

If I don't rebuild it myself, is it better to repair or just buy a new trans?

Thanks again

I have been driving it like this for a year now. Also have put it through some track runs. I'm not implying that yours will last this long. I have rebuilt a trans and it is ready to go in as soon as I find the time to swap it out. Therefore I'm in no hurry to get it out as I have a back up plan.

About rebuilding or repairing. That would be best answered once you get inside the trans and find out if anything else needs to be replaced. Since you would be getting in there I would replace the syncros at the minimum as well as the two input shaft and two intermediate shaft bearings. Then again there could be more stuff wrong with it but if it's just the bearing I would just repair it if you are up to the challenge.
