well i just checked my car at the mechanic and 2 engine mounts are broken the passenger side one and the back side underneath the battery , the question is i am having difficulties sometimes in changing gears from 3-4 or 4 to 3rd does this have anyhting to do with the broken mounts ??????????????? there is a rocking sound when i launch the car from 0 on the first and also the sound comes again while releasing the clutch ???

i cant find spare parts now ( mounts i order them and this will take 2 weeks) can i drive the car for now and what damage can occur from the broken mounts ( please mention to me in details ) what can be damaged from this i've been driving it like this since 2 months now :( :(

this is my new car its ( 96 GST manual ) RED color and very sexy :)

You can drive it as it is, but you need to drive "granny style"... Slow and Easy.

You can get mounts from salvage yards easily, or order them from the dealer. Even check out Car-Parts.com Database and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. Having broken mounts and allowing the engine/tranny to rock could cause you to have difficult times in shifting, not too sure though.

I would take the time to visually look and see how bad the mounts are first. See how badly they may be torn. If you plan on driving the car, then baby the living hell out of it. The shifting shouldn't be all to much related to the mounts unless you feel an obvious slam under the hood between gears. You might just be looking at a tranny problem if you are grinding gears (manual tranny) or there is slipping between those gears (both manual and auto tranny).

Look into a good set of Prothane Motor Mounts. They shouldn't cost you over a $100, and more than worth it! And seriously get your hand dirty putting them in yourself rather than taking it to a shop that will just rape you when it comes to putting them in. It is much better when you do it yourself!!!!

When you say "broken" do you mean the metal part is broken or the rubber inside is torn?

If it's bad enough to cause noises just from releasing and engaging the clutch, the best advice is DON'T DRIVE IT.

You can break alot of things at this point including shearing the teeth off the main pinion, breaking teeth off gears, breaking axles, ripping CV boots, siezing CV joints, basically grenading your transmission and axles... since you asked for specifics.

thanks for the answers, however can you please confirm that the mounts dont have anyhting to do with the tranny ????????????

plus i dont have these shops here i am now in Dubai and they dont have so many spare parts i order the mounts from the company itslef and it will be delivered after 2 weeks and the cost is Dhs 800 Dhs equals for 200 US Dollars

please just let me know what could break if i keep on driving it like that ???

well i meant the rubber inside is torn ???? sorry

If the rubber is torn, you're in a better spot just in terms of repairs since you only need to replace the rubber or get polyurethane replacements (only available for the passenger side mount, the rear mount will need to be replaced).

My advice is:
1. Buy this kit: EXTREME PSI : Prothane Motor Mount Inserts -2G Note that this kit only comes with the red inserts.
2. Replace the rear mount with an OEM one
3. Install the kit (comprises of inserts for the front and rear and replacements for the left and right).

In the meantime, check the rubber to see how bad it is. You can have a friend sit in the car and rev quickly from idle to ~3000rpms. If you see excessive engine movement, don't drive it. If not, you can MAYBE drive it like a grandma.

Also check the torque on your bell housing bolts since clunking of the transmission could be attributed to that.
