transmission Axle seals

Hey guys

my transmission Axle seals on my car are leaking. do i have to drop the transfer case to replace them? my mechanic says i do since i have awd. i need a second opinion.

You probably wouldn't have to, but it would make it a lot harder for the driver's side one. The T-case is only 5 bolts, and comes off pretty easy. I was surprised how simple it was when I took it off for the first time. Just look at this vfaq, it has the procedure for it: http://www.vfaq.com/mods/clutch-1G.html Just support the driveshaft and pull it off, then put in the new seal. The passenger side one shouldn't be as hard to get to.

I have the same problem and my guy is telling me he has to drop the tranny and open it as one of the seals is mounted from the inside-out...

He is charging me $150 for the job. Thoughts?

I had that same problem about 2 weeks ago, the guy said it was going to cost me 400$ and was going to take at least 4 hours. I did it for 10 bucks and took me 45minutes.

Its pretty easy, I wouldnt take it to someone, cause they are just trying to charge as much as they can to make more money. You could do it itself.

Can you give us some step by step on how you did it?

1. Remove the tire.
2. You'll see to nuts on the bottom of the tire assembly behind the rotor. Remove them
3. I used a ball joint remover to get split the stubs from there holes.
4. Then you'll have to get to the transaxle, so get under the car and I used a flat head screw driver to pry out the transaxle. You might find a easier way.
5. Once the transaxle is out the seal it compessed right there so just use the flat head to pry it out.
6. This parts kinda tricky. With the new seal you want it to go on all even not side by side. So I used a socket that fit the seal perfectly. Lineded it up and hit it with a hammer. After a little bit of moving around it went it. Make sure the spring its sealing it right.
7. Then check and make sure its all on even then put the transaxle back in. But make sure it goes it ALL THE WAY, it can look in but it wont actually be in, it will kinda lock.
8. But the stubs back through there holes (id put some grease back on them).
Then I used a jack to push the stubs up enough to tighten the nuts.
9.Put the tire back on and your done.

Its easy and alot better than paying 400 which is what they said I would have to pay.
Each side took me around 45min to a hour. But I was figuring out the easiest way to do it so I stopped and looked around for a bit.

The tranny does not have to come out. Both seals can be pulled with just the axles out.
