Tranny axle seals

Ok, drivers side is leaking, changed it out yesterday... still leaking.. wft? I made sure I didn't damage the seal putting it in, I used a peice of pipe with the same diameter as the od of the seal. It fit nice and tight around the axle (I checked before putting it on), it is definatly leaking from the seal on the axle (not the case). Good thing it's a quick job!!! I'm just looking for some tips or suggestions. It's pretty annoying, I have a nice puddle under the car every morning! ... Maybe just maybe I over filled it heh

When you put the new seal in, did it have the O spring on inside?
How did you go about filling it?

check the surface on the axle where the seal rides. If this is heavily scored it will leak no matter how many times you change the seal. Still, I would expect a minor leak and not a puddle.

Yeah the only time I have had puddles, not drops, is when the O spring in the gasket was missing.

I am having the same problem on my passenger side seal. I have replaced it 3 times now, but it is still leaking! I have lubed it and was real careful to ake sure not to damage it putting the axle in. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

First I would check to see if scoring on the metal is the problem. If everything checks out there, you could compare yours to mine.

Did the new seals have the o spring in them? Hows the surface the seal sits on? Any scratches from removing the old seals?

I will check the surface the next time I replace the seal AGAIN! It was also mentioned to me that the tranxaxle breather could be blocked forcing the pressure to be let off out the seal. I will check that as well. I have been buying the seal at a Checker, but I think I remember someone saying that the passenger/driver side seals are different part numbers? They listed the same part for both. Maybe this whole time I have been using the wrong seal?

On AWD's the seals are different between passenger and driver side. The drivers side is more expensive and is metal with a rubber lining. The passenger side should be all rubber, with a metal o spring facing the inside of the transmission. If the seal does not have the o spring, it will leak.

I bought anoter seal tonight, different manufacturer (CarQuest) it looks a little different, but still has the spring on the inside. Just doesn't have the "dust boot" that the other one had. I will try this one next, and I will check the surface of the mating surface for abrasions.

note that carquest, checker, napa, auto zone, etc don't make seals. They rebox them but don't make them. If you look closely at the seal you will see a mfg name printed on it.

I would stick with OEM for tranny seals.
