just got my dsm chip and it's burned for 650's. now someone told me to set my translator for 450's. um okay. but why??? i'm running 650's. i've set it to 450's but since, have pulled it all the way back to 580's on my translator and it seems as though i'm still running rich. cause i know i'm rich at 450's. no knock, egt's only get to 1400 max!!!

anyway, can someone tell me why i'd need to set it for 450's? cause i'm not tricking the computer anymore i wouldn't think, using this new chip. anyway, someone help me out here. i wanna set it to 650's but wanna make sure i'm not gonna run too lean. thanks!

Come on buddy, think about it. If you don't know exactly what your doing then you shouldn't be modifing your fuel and timing system like you are.

Anyways, I'll spoon feed you  . Set your MAFT for 450's so it will send the ecu the proper signal for the amount of air mass that is actually occuring. Then your ecu chip will compensate the fuel and timing and scale for the injectors accordingly. Fine tuning adjustments can now be made from their. Also make sure your base fuel pressure is set properly unless you are using it as a tuning tool.

no reason to be an ass about it. trying to understand why it had to be set at 450's that's all. not use to having a chip in....being that i just got it.

Scott,

I think I posted in another thread about this same thing. But here goes my explaination of how the DSMchip works when used with a GM MAS and Translator.

I have 650 injectors in my car. When I just had the GM translator, I had it set for 650's, and just had to tune in a click or two on the Idle, MID and HI settings to have the car run OK. On my SAFC I fine tuned the fuel thru the RPM band to get the car to run better.

When I ordered my DSMchip from Jeff I told him my setup, 650's, GM translator, 255 pump, size of my turbo, what boost I wanted to tune for on the street, I even mailed him a log of a 3rd gear pull to show timing, O2's, injector pulse and duty cycle and knock.

He burned me a chip for my setup with the instructions to set my GM translator back to all Zero's and to 450's for the injectors. The reason for this it because Jeff changed the code in the Eprom to account for larger injectors and more Ariflow so the translator doesn't have to try to fool the ECU anymore. Same for the SAFC.

Keep in mind that when you unplug the ECU it resets all the fuel trims, and it takes a few days of "normal driving" for the MID and HI trims to adjust by themselves. LOW trims can be adjusted (with SAFC/GM trans) almost immediately after the car warms up since the LOW trim changes at idle so easily.

When I installed my new DSMchips Eprom ECU, with everything ZERO'ed out the car started perfectly, held a smooth 750rpm idle, and drove perfectly around town. I DID NOT try any WOT runs till the Fuel trims in the ECU self adjusted.

A few days later after my MID & HI trims had settled down, I had to ad some fuel to the HI with the GM trans (my version 1.3 has one click = about 5%). Two clicks for HI, based on my HI trim showing so lean at 139%. A couple of hours of driving later my HI trim was at 114% so the adjustments were working.

AN interesting side note/observation about the/MY DSMchip, If you got the chip program with the 2X airflow code, your MID fuel trim will NOT move much off of 100% at least mine HAS NOT. Also the MID & HI adjustments on the GM MAFT only affect the WOT fuel delivery in my setup. Any driving under 35% throttle is controlled by the IDLE knob on the GM MAFT and with my LOW SAFC settings. Example: when IM cruising on the highway at 65 - 70mph my rpms are between 2750 - 3000, and my Throttle is only at 24 - 30%. To keep my HI fuel trim close to 100% I need to subtract 14% from 2400 to 3600rpm on the SAFC.

I have been learning to tune all over again since Dec. 3rd, when I got the chip installed. Im learning a little more each day I drive the car. ALSO, after taking the car to the dyno last week for some tuning Im learning that I had the car tuned WAY to rich and I actually was seeing "rich knock" on my logger. After removing about 15% fuel in the HI rpms for a WOT run the knock dropped to a few counts and the car made more power. all the time I was seeing knock on the street i was adding more fuel and not making the knock go away.

Anyway, I hope all this helps you out. If you have any other questions PM me, and i'll try to answer them as best as I can.

For gods sake buy a wideband.

Not to self: Do not purchase 2x airflow code.
