Well today is September 1st of 09. About an hour go I got back from the Chrysler dealer. had the safety transfercase recall done. My car is a 1992 eagle talon. I had first planned to do the recall work myself since I've had a leaky tramsfercase. I bought all the stuff to do all the work myself. Upon reading here, I decided to give it a try at the dealer. For some reason I was kinda hoping for the dealer to deny the recall. Honestly. Maybe I was afraid that they would start to give me sh1t because my car is not stock anymore and making an excuse saying that the recall has been voided because of my modifications an such. I drove to mitsubishi first. [I hate talking on the phone. So I decided to go in person]. Either way. I went to mitsu and asked for the recall. When I told them that my car was an eagle, they said that they can't help me because my car is not mitsubishi. True. I admitted it for the sake of argument. I excuse myself and drove back home. I felt a bit relieved about the fact that I had atleast tried and i was also a bit happy that I was going to work on my car again. As I was driving back home, i saw the chrysler dealer. All of a sudden, my sense of satisfaction and relief had left and was replaced with a worrysome unsatisfied feeling. I said to myself "one more time. F@ck it. Why not".
Got to the chrysler dealership. I was very polite and professional about it. But I will say this. I didn't ask about the recall nor did I ever mentioned anything related to cars age and the possibility of. I went to the service and mentioned that i wanted to bring my car in for a safety recall service. I assumed and treated my car as if it was new or newer.
After asking for my vin #, they checked it and told me that the recall has been done in 1998. I mentioned that I was informed that it was an open safety recall. an ongoing problem with the transfercase leaking. I then asked them if they knew why my tramsfercase was leaking. They said that they don't know but if it fall in the safety recall service, then they would replace it. I made an appointment to take the car in for a check up. I already knew it was the recall problem. 2 days later took the car in. They said that yes. Its a recall problem and they would fix it. They ordered the parts. I took the car in 5 days later, which is today. About 1hour and 15minutes later, my car was done.
I believe that some of the people here that have had bad luck with the recall, could be related to communication skills, the way you say things, etc. With things like this, I never use the phone. Always in person. Try to be as polite, professional as you can. try to articulate your words more and it also helps to dress more modest. Don't be rude or demanding but firm. Instead of asking if its possible to..... just say it. Instead of: "Is there a recall for my car?" or " can I have the recall service done to my car?" etc...
Its better to say something simillar to this: {After greetting the person in service department and a firm handshake}. "I'd like to bring my car in for a safety recall service".
Or "I'd like to make an appontment to bring my car in. I noticed some oil coming out from the transfercase and it seems that chrysler (or mistu) has issued a safety recall service for such" Then they will most likely ask you for what type of car and vin #.
Then you go from there.
Or it could've been that I just got lucky. Needless to say, I was treated very nice. They offered me coffee, a courtesy ride to where ever is it that I needed to go, etc. I was very pleased with the service that Chrysler provided.

jorge.

I wish I lived there just for that. haha. So...the recall is only for cars up to 1998? I have a 99 obviously.

I´ve imported a 97 gsx to Germany with manual transmission but my transfer case leaks. The dealer in Germany told me that the recall is out of date? Is that correct? Could you also tell me what they are doing on the recall?

even though the recall may not be for the 99's i would still check under your car for leaks and just make sure that your transer case is full. afterall, what causes all wheel lock up at high speeds is because the fluid gets too low. i would rather be safe and check than get all wheel lock up at 115mph or higher. thats just my opinion though.

i don't think that the recall should be out of date, but if for whatever reason they say they don't want to do it, then do it yourself... it's not that difficult and you can find step by step instructions with pictures on dsm tuners or vfaq. but if you're going to lag it, then just make sure your transfer case fluid is always full(there's a thread for fluid changing and checking aswell);)

I live in Canada, and the Eclipse wasn't available to us, only the talon. Mine is a U.S car, does anyone know if the Mitsubishi dealerships up here will do the safety recall? I called one dealer and they said they have no record of their being a safety recall issued for the eclipse.

i recently noticed that mine had began leaking by gear oil slung across the car. i checked and the recall ahd been doen be a previous owner in 98. so i asked "isnt this a safty recall so its covered for the life of the car?" he said that unless the recall notice specifies as a lifetime it isnt. so i called nhtsa, he told me it was not a lifetime as well. so i called chrysler and talked with them about how it is leaking and i didnt want to be driving on the freeway and have it lock up on me, even though i refilled it when i noticed it was leaking. after being on hold for about 12 minuts she said that on the dealer recall notices it will say a warranty period (if applicable) and if not than it is lifetime, meaning that mine WAS covered even though it had been previously repaired. so i gave her the number to thedealer where the service advisor was giving me $hit and she put me on hold while she called him. 10 min later she said that since it was over the $1000 instant approval that i will have to wait 2 days, then chrysler will call me directly after the have pre-paid the dealer for parts and labor and i can take it in. i also told her that it was clunking on hard decel so i know that it needs to be replaced not just re-sealed.

so there yahave it. thats how im getting ANOTHER new transfer case.

i called corporate and they're telling me there are no "open" recalls on my car, how is this possible?

I took my car to the Mitsu dealer last fall(09) and they denied me saying that recall was out of date. Even though it's a lifetime recall?? They said that there aren't many of our cars on the road anymore and that they're very old models. Therefore the recall has been expired.
I called the Mitsu number today to double check, and they said the recall expired in '02. Guess the car will get a rebuilt transfer case instead of a new one.

i had gone to Chrysler in October of 09 and asked about the recall, they had informed me to call Chrysler about the recall and if they approve it then they would be glad to fix if so, i called and was informed that i would be contacted with in 24 hours and so i was, i was told that i was fully approved to have it looked at and if there was a problem that fell under the recall it would be covered. i was happy for the first 15 mins, the guy called me back to inform me that Chrysler will not cover it and sorry for the inconvenience. i was heated over that, but hey the car is 20 years old so i just did the yoke my self, not vary hard just time consuming.

recall kit from dodge was $34 and they sold it to me for there cost.
good luck if any 1 else tries to get this done.

I'm bringing this back because I recently went in to a local Mitsu dealer. The guy ran my VIN and showed me what recalls are available for my car, the only thing that showed was the ball joint recall, not the transfer case. I know on the recall it says autos, but people have gotten it for 5 speeds in here. And I don't know a way to show that the transfer case recall goes for both autos and manuals to the dealer.

The recall is VIN dependent so he could change the tranny from 5 speed to auto in the computer to show that there is an actually recall out.

Anyone got any ideas on how to go about this now?

Just got off the phone with my local chrysler/dodge dealer. They said the recall was done on my car in 1998 and its only done once. But they did allow me to order the kit of the yolk, u-joint, and I had them order a t/c output seal because I might as well replace it. This is easy to replace yourself so I am going to do it.

hello everyone, i have been going through a living hell trying to get this fixed. When i put my new clutch in a few months back i drained the fluid from everything and my transfer case was nearly dry. I am trying to get the recall work and the local dealership as well as chrysler corp wont do anything about it. They said that it had already been done in 1998. They also told me that the recall is only good for 10 years from the date of the recall. I call complete Bull SHIIt on this! It is a safety recall. How can i go about persuading them into seeing that this needs to be done.

my car is finally in at chrysler right now and i got them to look at the transfer case, my logic that i told them was that some mechanics when performing the recall might just refill the transfer case and tell the customer to monitor the leak. Well if the owner didnt know what a transfer case was he might just say screw it. Basically there is a record of the car coming in for the recall but they dont keep records of what work was done, so i said the faulty parts could very well still be in there and they agreed to taking it in and looking at the problem. I should be hearing back from them this early afternoon and will repost with more information

looks like it's worth me calling the chrystler dealer here since I noticed mine is leaking badly when I put the 3" on it.

I don't think it's worth the time and effort it takes to get the stealership to even look at it, let alone do something about it. IMO you're better off just buying the yoke kit and installing it yourself so you know it is done and done right.;)

well chrysler called and told me that there was a leak but unfortunately they cannot complete it as of now because the recall had already been done in 1998. they are calling corporate for me trying to find out what to do, i was under the understanding this was a lifetime recall and still had to be completed regaurdless of if it had been done before, anyone have any advice on what to say or do on this matter when they call back. I called NHTSA or whatever and they said there is nothing they can do and that they only have recalls in effect for 10 years.

I work 60 hours a week and make decent money. And I'm cheaper than the average dsm'er.

Wife says I can't buy an evo till I get rid of a vehicle, and I'm not ditching my S10 because owning 2 dsm's as transportation would mean lots of missed days of work.
