I'm in the process of trying to pull my trans off my engine and it will come out about 2-3 inches and just stops. It's off of a 7bolt out of an evo but is the setup pretty much the same as the awd 6bolts? I searched for similar problems but all i found was "use a prybar". As i pull the trans away the release fork catches on the TOB and the trans case holding it there. I would like to reuse the clutch/pressure plate so just prying on it and breaking that little piece (wedge collar?) would be nice to avoid doing. I need helpp. Any suggestions would be great.

Are you sure everything else is detached? Xfer case, all the bolts to the motor, starter, slave cylinder, etc?

You have the starter plate bolts removed from the transmission bellhousing as well as the transmission is not hitting the cross-member or frame rail? Did you slightly lower the engine by removing the front/rear and passenger-side mounts? Put a jack with pad under the oil pan and slightly lower the engine a bit, making sure that the water pump pulley does not sit on the driver-side frame rail.

As well, don't let the transmission just sit hanging off the engine the whole time. You will damage the clutch or input shaft if you have it hanging off without anything under the transmission (jack and pad also).

Ahhh, didn't catch that it was an Evo 8. Yes, the throwout bearing retention clip is what is holding you up, you need to seperate the clip without damaging it -- which is already likely done. If you do damage it, contact AMS, and get the clip -- Exedy makes a replacement clip that is around $25.00.

The fork/thowout bearing needs released with a screwdrive like stated before and don't forget to pull out the shaft that is in the t-case. I just used a slide hammer and a M8x1.25 bolt with the head grinded down a bit to fit on the slide hammer. With those two things out it should come apart fairly easily.
