Trans mount bolt hole

So I pulled my spare trans out for to be used for my project today and found something unsettling. Apparently the previous owner stripped one of the two trans mount bolt holes and responded to that situation by drilling a 5/8 inch hole in its place and used some coarse threaded tractor looking bolt along with a half inch worth of shim washers to fix it. My question is, how can I fix this blasphemy and be able to torque the trans mount bolts down well enough when I go to install it? Any info would be sweet. I hope that wasnt to confusing, ill check back in a few hours, thanks.

Which hole is the trans ??? In some case we have welded the hole and retap
 
It's one of the bolt holes for the transmission mount nearer the right side of the car.

Here are some pics. I just want a way to use the bolt hole properly and not spend a fortune doing it. I dont like the idea of playing with my car knowing one of the mounts isnt secure.

no need for a helicoil just take that hellicoil out retap and use a bolt that matches whatever tap thread pitch you use.
 
i wouldnt be against a helicoil but the original bolt is an M12 so unless the helicoil can fill a 5/8"+ hole and still provide an m12 size orifice i think i might need something different. still scratching my head : (

p.s. i think a helicoil would be a good solution to a stripped out situation involving the original threads. in this case the threads have already been drilled out to the extreme to accommodate that ridiculous bolt you see near the washers.
 
Does the bolt the previous owner put in there thread all the way in? If not, how far in does it thread? If it goes in, I don't see a problem with using a similar thread/pitch bolt that is the appropriate length. If it doesn't go in the very far, I don't see another option than tapping or helicoil.
 
Just buy the next size up tap.There is a lot of meat left around that hole. Just stick some different sized taps in the hole until one fits well. No big problem here bud!
 
it seems like the hole was just drilled out and a gigantic self tapping bolt was used. even the threads it made are very poor looking and have me worried to torque it down. do you guys think it may be okay to properly tap it to the next biggest size and then JB weld hardware in the hole and tap it back to M12/1.25? Thanks for all the replies so far gents.

So i went to a machine shop and they recommended using a screw in sleeve and using lockite/JB weld to make it permanent. Seems like an easy fix, have it curing up right now with JB weld. I'll post back and report if it was strong enough when i got to install the motor/trans assembly. thanks again for the replies.


Screw in sleeve worked, I forget the torque but I believe if was around 20-40'lbs and it held just fine.

the bolt holes on these transmissions suck ass...ive seen a few personally where the threads turn to dust. :notgood:
