Manual or Automatic?

Manual transmission have a drain and fill plugs.

If you have an automatic transmission you should be going to a shop to have it done

As far as what fluid, you will need to decide for yourself, there are several threads on what fluid to use in your transmission, manual or automatic.

Personally I use, OEM DIAQUEEN LSD GEAR OIL, its what Dogbox Racing put in my transmission when they rebuilt it, and I been using it ever since.

If you need to check the level of fluid, the best bet is to drain it all out and put new fluid in. It's a GOOD idea to keep your driveline in check, as this will become the most expensive part of your vehicle.

I would assume its a manual, since automatics don't grind going into gears.

If it is grinding, throw some syncromesh in it, as well as make sure ALL of your components in your hydraulic system are up to par.

Check if your clutch is dragging:
Put the car into 1st. Clutch in, Rev the car up to about 5K or 6K.
If the car shudders forward your clutch is dragging. Do the following steps to correct this.

Check in the cabin, by the clutch pedal, so you see any fluid leaking down by your feet? If so your master is bad.

I would properly bleed out your clutch system, as I've run into countless DSM's with terrible clutch pressure.

Pull the boot off of your slave cylinder. Did black fluid fall in your face? Good. If so replace it.

After everything else checks out, check your clutch fork.

Please read through all of this to get a better understanding for your driveline.

However the main part I was referencing was this.

If the arm is sitting off towards the passenger side, you need to pull the transmission back out and add a washer or two. This gets things back in line. If you don't, the hydraulics in trying to take up all the extra slack, will push the arm over and bottom out on the inner bell housing. If you are fighting clutch adjustment problems on an existing clutch install, get under the car and check this out. If you remove a crossmember to see it better, you can pull off the rubber boot and look in the bell housing with a flash light while an assistant pushes on the clutch pedal. You may see the arm hitting the inner bell housing.

If you are having problems with a clutch adjustment, don't be tempted to try to lengthen the clutch slave cylinder rod. It may work for a few symptoms (worn pedal assembly mostly) but it is not the right way to fix things. In order to take up additional free play, it puts constant pressure on the release bearing.

I would also see if your master is adjusted properly.

Honestly, in my personal opinion, an iffy transmission can be driveable for MONTHS and months if you do all of this properly.

However, if you've gone through all of this religiously then you probably should look at a rebuild.
DSMtuners own twicks69 rebuilds transmissions, send him a PM if none of this helped!
As you can see, I've had a lot of issues like this. Feel free to send me a PM and I will be happy to assist you on a more personal basis.

Good luck!
