i have a 1g fwd and am replacing the tranny, but am thinking of doing some work to it while it is out. aside from the obvious synchros what else should be replaced? is there something else that is known to break beside the diff? eventually i want a built shep trans but dont have the money for that now. i am thinking about ordering parts from jacks but decided to get some opinions first
thanks

If your going to take the tranny spart anyway..Once it's all apart do a visual inspection of the teeth on the gears..If the teeth have alot gauging, from grinding gears and such, then yes those should be replaced.. A hayne's manual or factory service manual, will show you exactly what is needed, and how to do it...That's how I learned how to do a manual tranny from the awd early 90's dodge cars..And what was funny was the tranny I got to rebuild was in my eclipse, talon, laser hayne's manual..And it was way easier using the manual than it was to use the computer software we had at school..

It's been done on tuners to use evo gears, but if down the road your going with shep, then maybe just replace what needs it to get you by.

if your going to do it get the dual syncros, you wont regret it, how ever if you dont ya you will regeret it LOL

i just rebuilt my awd one and there is a great lay out step by step on tear down and rebuild on here

at least if anything do the bearings the seals and the syncros if you have it out might as well do it right :thumb:

Great article w/pics: Dre.

To remove/install the 36mm nuts on the input & intermediate shafts place the tranny in both 1st and 5th gears at same time to hold the shafts. 5th is done by removing the spring pin holding the shift fork, then the fork, and then sliding the syncro sleeve into 5th.

Take the time to do the preload spacer (shim) measurements as per manual (stay close as possible to the small end of the range). It will make all the difference in shifting. Most local tranny shops will never even do this due to the time it takes.
