Hey guys, I'm having the tranny being rebuilt by a local transmission shop. I had the motor out with the tranny and the transmission was grinding a little in second gear so I figured it would be the perfect time to fix it. I take it to the shop, they opened it up, found out that I needed a 2nd gear Hub/Sleeve, 2nd gear, 2nd gear synchros, and a tapered roller bearing. I called up JNZ Tuning and it was about the same price for the stock parts as it was for the dual cone synchro set. I figured it would be better to go with the dual cone set since in another 100k miles I'll end up with the same problem. I gave them my VIN number, build date of the car, and how many teeth were on the 2nd gear and had the parts shipped to my house.

Took it to the shop about a week ago, he said everything looked fine. Today he called me and said I have the wrong parts. He said that the original was a 1 piece synchronizer design and I gave him a 3 piece. I said yep, its a newer design and explained the purpose of the dual cone synchronizer. He said it still wouldn't work. For it to work it would require a "low" gear even then it may not according to him. I'm fairly certain JNZ sent me the right parts, I think the guy at the shop just doesn't know what he's doing. When I asked him to get some numbers off the transmission case while we were on the phone he flipped it over and goes just broke that part which was a plastic baffle, which I have never heard of. Now I have to buy that part as well. He has worked on quite a few Manual transmissions and a lot of engine builders here recommend him so I figured installing the 2nd gear synchro set wouldn't be a problem. I knew I should've attempted the rebuild myself but I felt more comfortable taking to someone that would know what they're getting into. He doesn't seem to really try and install the parts or tell me exactly what's wrong with the parts I gave him. I would like to take it back and try it myself or send it to someone that rebuilds DSM transmissions but he's already going to charge me around $100 for labor. What should I do?

Cut your loses. Pay the man $100 and send it to a(DSM) shop you trust. just my opinion. I could only see it getting worse from here if you have any other problems.

PS: has he ever rebuilt a DSM trans before? I would also double check you new parts and make sure they are right before doing anything too harse.

Sounds like he broke the electrical connection in the rear (the rod-like plug). :-( That thing is $75. Take it to a DSM transmission shop, or ship it to someone reputable like Dogbox, Shep, or Jacks.

Yes he has worked on a few transmissions out of eclipses/talons/lasers he said, but he also told me it too him awhile to do things on it since he had to make a bearing puller. I looked at the part numbers that JNZ sent me and everything looks ok.

MD745896 - 2nd Gear Synchronizer Ring
MD749414 - Hub & Sleeve, M/T
MD726236 - Bearing, M/T Inter
MD742445 - Spring, M/T Synch
MD742775 - Key, 1-2
MD748576 - Gear, M/T Intermed

I also just read here that the parts I have here are listed in that same thread which is being used in a 95 GST. What are the differences in the 1g and 2g transmission?

Where can I find this baffle that this guy broke? Or if anyone had the part number, he said the part number was MDsomething766-1 on the part. I tried searching but came up with nothing, I know JNZ will have the part, I just need the number or actual name of it.

If I was you I would get my trans back from him and actually send it to some one that no's what there doing if he flip it and broke something that quickly he is a very careless trans builder and that shows what type of quality work he does. Have him discount the amount of the sensor from the bill and check everything else before you take it your trans with you.

+1 100/hr is redic

The labor is supposed to be $50/hour. He said it would probably take about $200, but I don't want to go out of there with a messed up transmission and down $200 because he doesn't know how to install the dual cone 2nd gear. Doesn't it just drop in place of the old one with nothing else required (only the 2nd gear, Hub/Sleeve, Synchros, springs, and keys)?

I still would have taken it to shep, jack, tre, or dog. Those places will do free things to it which will help the transmission last longer and shift better that a local shop will not. They can also do upgrades such as the rare earth magnet.
