Just got a 91 GSX.. Guy said they rebuilt the tranny and engine.. Less then 3k miles on both.. But when you go to put it in first, you really have to throw it hard left and hard up to get it to engage.. You have to throw it back decently hard to get it into 2nd as well.. In 5th you can see the stick move when you press the gas.. Moves forward when your on the gas, moves back when your off.. Now, did they F up the rebuild or could this just be cables that need to be adjusted?

Hoping its cables, like the guy said it probably was.. Or did i indeed get screwed with a bad tranny?

Thanks,

Shane

the shiter moving forward during accel. is due to movement from trans/cables shift the trans (with engine off) from under the hood and see how it engages, then check fluids. start there.

If your shifter moves around when you're in 5th, chances are you need to tighten the 36mm nuts inside the trans. Just take the passenger wheel off, remove the plastic wheel well cover, take off the side cover of your trans. Get an oil pan under there when you do to catch the gear oil that comes out. Then you'll see 2 big 36mm nuts on there. Just tighten them down, put a dimple in the nut to keep it in place and reassemble. I'm pretty sure there's a VFAQ article on this. I had to do it in my old car. It's pretty easy.

5th gear im really not concerned with, but thanks.. Ill be sure to do that..

I just want to know what it is thats causing 1st gear to be so hard to get into

Its not the cables.. Had a guy help me with it.. He went under the hood and put the car in first, when i let off the clutch.. it wanted to pull out hard..

So its something inside the tranny.. Anyone with this problem before? Any idea what it is? Something needs adjusted? New gear?

So much for my "freshly rebuilt tranny"

Take a look at the shifter cable bushings on the shifter and the trans, i had a friend with the same problem and the bushing was crushed, theres a skateboard bearing mod floating around about it where you replace the rubber ones with metal ball bearings

Could it possibly be my synchronizers? If so what exactly would i have to buy and from where? Do i need a synch. for each gear? Or what??

1/2 Shift Fork maybe??

im having the same problem getting in and out of second gear im stumped
i thought it was the clutch going bad but everything else shifts pefectly
