Tps Sensor Bad???

When going up hills my car tends to have small surges of power like almost if you were to get some crap gas. I never lose boost so I am not to worried of a boost leak perhaps. But I do know my mechanic told me that the sensor does need replacing. Would that be the cause of this problem ### I am a little short on cash at the moment and just really don't want to mess up my car to much. And does anyone know where I can get a good deal on a tps and wiring for it. And how do I tell if it is a 3 pin or 4 pin? Sorry bout the post its ###### been posted a thousand times just for some reason my search ain't working. :cry:
 
Your 3 or 4 pin question?
I believe (correct me if I am wrong) the non-turbo has 3 pins and the turbo charged cars have four pins. 3 pins equals 3 wires going to the sensor; 4 = 4 wires.

When a TPS starts to go bad, you typically get dead spots as the throttle opens. You can check this out your with an Ohm meter. If you are facing the TPS sensor after you disconnect the harness you will see four pins. The connector will have 3 tabs/tits on it (represented by a * on the connector sketch below):

*[1 2 3 4]*

Measure the resistance across terminals 2 and 4 as you open the throttle. There should be a nice steady rise or fall in resistance (I can’t remember which way the resistance went). If it spikes suddenly off scale, yet returns to where you except it to be once you open the throttle a tad more, then the sensor has a bad spot and needs to be replaced.

While here you should measure the resistance across pins 1 and 4. If should be between 3.5 and 6.5 k ohms. If outta that range replace it.

I doubt the TPS is your problem because it would happen all the time you drive, not just up hills. Sounds more like a fuel supply problem. Does it happen under full boost?

Additionally boost leaks can still be going on even though your gauge is reading a steady psi. The turbo is just working extra hard to over come the leaks. Boot leak check is always good to perform.

Your pin comment, is not necesarily correct, but I know that the 1g is a 3pin and the 2g is a 4pin.
 
Well I know for a fact its a TPS code my "CEL" is throwing at me. So could it be I just notice the bursts going up hills for the reason the car is having to use more throttle to get up the hill? and like you said I could be hitting "a spot where the throttle has a dead spot." I typically drive just flat surface and it's never over 30 mph in my town.
 
Some clarifiction on my part...good catch JohnCIV_Talon. The posting above is for the 2g, since his car is a 2g. Shop manuals show 3 pin for 2.0 NA and 4 pin for 2.0 Turbo and 2.4 on the 2g's.
