Toasted Eprom, any point in keeping?

So my ECU went up in smoke in my talon yesterday no big deal, i had planned on rebuilding it just for peace of mind, i'll just have to do it to the next one i get.

However, just because i wanted to see the carnage, i opened it up and was a little bummed when i found out it was an EPROM ECU. I'll get over it, i dont have any real NEED for EPROM with what i have planned for this car, but had i known i was sitting on an EPROM i would have definitely not dragged my feet on rebuilding it.

My question is, is there any point in hanging onto this one for any reason? aka, is there anything potentially useable for someone else? Judging by the huge black burnt spot i'd say it's a safe assumption that it isnt fixable. Also, will i be ok with a non eprom ECU, i dont feel like shelling out the bigger bucks for another eprom if i dont have to. Thanks guys.

Depends. Even though there is a burned spot, it may be fixable. Hopefully "Steve" will reply and set you straight.

One reason to have an Eprom'd ECU is if you want to run DSMLink. They replace the Eprom with their own.

Otherwise, there are a number of places to get rebuilt ECU's. Just do your searching and make sure you get the right one: AWD vs FWD, Manual vs Auto, CA vs NA, etc.

Yeah, since i was never really planning on running dsmlink, i'm not TOO upset, i dont plan on running excessively large injectors, or getting into anything more than a 16g. So i'm sure an SAFC will be adequete for any tuning i need. I just feel bad because like i said, had i known i may have been a little more careful.

i'll take pics of it when i get a chance, i'm sure it's done for but hey, i'm no expert. If something can be salvaged off it that's exclusive to EPROM i'm happy to help someone out.

Sorry to say it's really dead. The first clue was the smell as I opened the box. :)

It has two problems that are usually fatal.
The first is bubbled/cracked chips. This is expensive to fix since the parts only come from EPROM ECU's but it possible to replace them.

The second is burning the fiberglass. This was the final death blow.

This is under C106 and you can see there was a major short and things got very hot.

Changing the caps before this happened could have saved this ECU.
