Hey guys,

I was driving my car and I heard a huge pop sound and the car died on me. The inter-cooler piping that attaches to the bottom end of the turbo popped off, so I put it back together it ran fine. The next day I made a third gear pull and it started to shutter at 3000-3500 rpm, it accelerated slowly to 4200 rpm and then it died. It runs really rich, 10.5-1 on idle, combined full trim for some reason is at 20 percent on idle. Also the engine shakes unless I rev it then it stops shaking. I tried adjusting the AFR (I added 30 percent Air at Idle) to 14-1 and it started driving; however there was no power at all. No engine codes are showing up and at idle the rpms stay at 850 even with the 20 percent combined fuel trim. Any ideas of what the problem might be would be awesome, or some ideas for me to check would be great.

PS. I checked through the threads on this site, and I couldn't find any information related to my problems.

Regards

Do a boost leak test. :thumb:

I did a boost leak check and found a few leaks which I patched up, I was pumping in 10psi, I went to start my car, and it wouldn't start. It would crank but wouldn't turn over. Any idea why that happened? Could it have been from the boost leak check?

Pumping in 10 psi? Ummmm. I think u might not have done the blt test correctly. I usually do 25that psi at the regulator and it will show about 20ish at the boost gauge. Then comes soapy water spray bottle. Dont run or attempt tp run tge engine durring this test.

Sounds like boost leak to me.
Anytime your piping pops off, you need to thoroughly inspect every inch of your piping,
your couplers and your clamps from turbo to intake manifold.
What method are you using for boost leak test by the way?

I did do the boost leak test correct. I put the tester on the end of the turbo where the intake connects I only used 10 psi to start and when I sprayed the soapy water the leaks showed up. I patched them up and no more air was escaping. I re-attached the intake made sure it was on tight. I found out the car wouldn't start cause the spark plugs (7) were fouled up so i changed them (6). the car started but the problem is still there. still running super rich. its reading 10.5/1 AFR at idle. Ill try to use 20 psi and see if it shows more leaks. If anyone has any suggestions pls let me know.

The reason everyone is telling you to do a blt is because generally when you are that rich it is a boost leak that is the culprit. If you pump it up to 20 psi or so and it holds pressure ok then look elsewhere. What are your mods? Like what injector\maf combo are you running, tuning source, and fuel pressure are you running? It could be that your pump is over running your fpr etc..,idk?

It does sound like a boost leak to me i just cant find it. ill try a higher psi. Im running stock injectors with a stock maf. i have a AFPR with a gauge set to 43 psi an I use ecm link lite v3 to tune. I had combined FT at 0 and airflow per rev at 0.25. now its combined FT is at +20% and air flow per rev is still the same

gotchya, once i had a boost leak so large it was hard to find. i had a hole in one soft hose that would just blow my soapy water away. i finally found it when a drop of water dripped down then slammed into the block. the hole was nickel sized. you can run your hands over all the piping and couplers under pressure and im sure you will find it. another thought that could be causing this, possibly you afpr is not behaving. or you have a bad coil pack. i had one side of one pack go bad (burnt where the wire goes in) this caused my car to run very poor and rich.

Well i hear a hissing sound from the middle of the intake manifold closer to the fire wall but i cant pin point what exactly is leaking. I also considered a bad coil pack but all my spark plugs are fouled. Im not sure but wouldnt only the one side with the bad coil pack be more fouled then the other. Plus when i hook up ecm link im not throwing any engine codes. I did find a small air leak on my afpr but i fixed it and the gauge reads 43 psi. Does any know of any spots on the intake manifold that are in the area i described that could be leaking????

with the coil packs you can have 1 or all 4 go out. even though its a waste spark, one side of a coilpack can go out.if you have another set of coils it would be worth connecting them to see. what plugs are you runing?(me NGK BPR6Es) as for the leak near the firewall, the throttle body shaft is a notorious leaking point, but thats usually very small and i doubt it would cause this.

Turns out one of the coil packs was starting to go bad. The problems fixed thanks for your help.
