Title issues in buying a 1G AWD

Hello, down the street from my house there is an 1990 AWD eagle talon for sale. I will probably be able to buy the car for 500-600 dollars. It's turbo has been removed and it appears to be missing the power steering pump bracket for some odd reason but I'll delve into the condition of it upon request.

My question is not really a technical question. You see the problem I have with the car is in being able to get it registered after I buy it (I have not bought the car yet). The seller does not have a title for it. It is a little complicated to explain but essentially the owner abandoned the vehicle there and (I was told) that the owner did not put the vehicle in his name (he was wanted by the police).

He (the seller) is trying to get the title for the car now and I, obviously wanting the car, want to assist him to that end. So my question to you guys is. To be sure we're clear the seller and the owner are not the same person. Also the owner will not be returning to pick up this car. Let's just the owner decided to screw with the guy (read: Stole lot's of crap from the guy while he was in iraq). If it does not get sold it will be parted out.

How would I get the title to the car? Just go to the DMV and ask what to do? File a vehicle information request and then contact the previous owner?

If you guys can help you might get yet another DSMer in your ranks. I realize that I could just find another car but this car will be very cheap to get and also being that I already have a newer and reliable vehicle I will have plenty of time to work on this car. It is also has a clean interior and pretty decent body not to mention aftermarket wheels (unsure what kind).

Did the seller have a bill of sale for the vehicle when he got it from(the guy that is wanted)? Because if it is registered under the (wanted guys) name the only really way to get a title is if the (wanted guy)request a new title or file for a lost title. I would suggest finding another car to buy. I had to deal with a smilar issue like this when I was trying to buy a 1g shell and it was not worth trying it.

The vehicle does not have a shred of paper identifying it or any previous owner. No registrations, no insurance papers, no manuals, or reciepts,

The guy who owned the car split and didn't have much contact with the guy who's selling it. He was living in the guy's house and whilst the seller was in iraq stole a bunch of stuff out of his house (after using his car and getting a bunch of tickets and a suspended license) as far as I know he split a little after the seller got back. (for obvious reasons) The seller also found out the owner was wanted after he got back and was wanted before he bought the DSM.

This car has been at the house for almost a year now. I actually talked to the owner himself when he first got the car. Of course my lack of knowledge of the future didn't allow me to ask him any questions that could help me now.

For all intents and purposes this was abandoned by the owner. It has been at the house for almost 3-4 months.

It does look to be a very comlicated process to get the title. Supposedly the seller is looking up some company that specializes in doing this to try and get the title. I have avenues I thought of exploring myself. But I wanted to see if anyone has had experiemce in this and what they did to get the title.

hmmm, you might try the abandon idea. Call the Police department and them that there is a abandoned car at the house. They will fill a report and try to contact the owner on the registration. I do believe if no one responds within 60days or so that you can file to get the title as a abandoned car. I'm not sure if this applies where you are at but I think it's how it goes where i'm at. Worth a shot.
