Tire mounting issues

Wow!! where do I start?I bought a brand new set of rims at the swap meet at raceway park.Black Akitas with a thin spoke and machined outer lip.I allo order new tires.Hankook V12s.I took them over to the Midas shop right down te street from me.Thy said they would mount 2 tires on 2 rims for me and balance them for $50.So I though that was a good deal so I went for it.After waiting for 1 hour I went to go see what they were doing.When I went in and looked, they were working on my 2nd tire.I looked at the 1st one they did and saw that they totally gouged up my whole rim.Not only did they put my rim on a tire machine with these 4 huge steel teeth but they put the good side of the rim face down where the teeth bite into the rim.I showed the damage to the boss and he said that that how they mount these kind of tires on these rims.I couldn't believe what I was hearing.Its been over a month and I'm still fighting with this shop,to buy me new rims.Has any body ever heard of any shit like this before?He said that today he ordered me new rims.When he gets the new rims he said that he will take the tires off the bad rims. Then I can pick up my new rims and my tires.I'm worried that thy will tear up the beads removing the tires.Do you think they will be ok?Or should he be responsible forbuying me new tires also?

It depends on the what tire profile you're running, if it's pretty low, they may run the risk of tearing a bit of the beat off when they pry the lip over to dismount the tire. Sounds like they have a Hunter machine, they should have rubber/plastic sleeves to go over the lips if they have to reverse mount the tires. They probably suck at what they do! If they do tear a bit of the lip off, you/they may just put a coat of bead sealer against the inner lip and call it a day..Sorry about your rims man!

They do have a machine with rubber ends.It was sitting right next to the rim killer they used.

Once you get your new rims take them to an actual tire shop as they tend to have much more experience with mounting low profile tires without messing up your wheels.

after spending 4 hours mounting the back tires by hand with tire spoons $100 would have sounded like a deal!

45's aren't even that low of a profile for them to struggle with it. It's unfortunate that they didn't use the correct machine either, would have saved them from buying two new rims for their customer. But yea, when they get the new rim and remount the tires..make sure the beads weren't damaged prior to their removal. I'm sure you can ask to see how the tire is when they dismount..

The only reason to mount a tire with the face of a wheel down on a standard tire machine is if the wheel is a reverse mount design (rare for normal passenger car tires). Is the drop center of your wheel more towards the face of the wheel or the back of the wheel? They never should have mounted the tires with the wheel upside down on a clamping machine like that. It's nearly impossible to mount tires on a normal mount wheel when it's upside down. Either way, with the design of the machine, the face shouldn't have been scratched very much at all.

Even with an extremely low-profile tire, there shouldn't have been many problems mounting them. Today, I removed, repaired, and remounted a Corvette tire, Eagle F1 Run-Flat (thick sidewalls) in about 15 minutes total with the help of one of my techs on the other spoon. Tire mounting and dismounting is not rocket science. Read: They eff'ed up your wheel. Probably eff'ed up your tire too. Don't go there anymore.

I would be there every day. That is crap. They owe you new rims and a new tire if they messed it up. I used to work at a low grade tire shop. I mounted some ???/40 tires on some bbs wheels for a mk2 VW and had the rim face up and didnt mess them up. Make sure you get what they owe you. if not, call the better business bureau. It is really hard to mess a rim face up on a tire machine if you are careful and know what you are doing. Hope it all works out for you.

It is a reverse mount design.I did te back 2 by hand on top of a blanket.The only reason I brought the front 2 to Midas to mount,was to also get them balanced.In the pic there is 4 spots on the rim that are scrached like that .When the jaws came around to lock in the rim ,they also scraped along th spokes of the rim.

That makes more sense. I still don't know why they wouldn't grab the wheel from the outside unless their machine is one that only grabs from the inside. In which case, they should have told you to take them elsewhere to have them safely mounted. The fault still lies with them.

Is there a sign that states they are not responsible for wheel damage? All the shops in my area have one, though they have yet to mangle a wheel of mine.

I could have done a better job with hammer and pry bar I would most def never go back there

I didnt see no sign.It was the end of the day and I think the guys were just in a hurry to get home.spoon bar and heavy rubber mallet is definately the way to go!I just ran out of steam.

Its been almost 2 month since midas tore up my rims.Ive written a half dozen reports to BBB with no positive results yet.The owner at midas signe a paper and agreed to replace my rims but he just hasn't done it,Hes just giving me a run around.Any ideas of what I can do about this crap.If I file in small claims court Ill loose time from work.Is there a certain site were I can post this problem to let people Know what kind of place this Midas shop is?

Contact MIDAS' head office. The shop you are dealing with is probably only franchised, you need to deal from the top of the chain down on this.
