I have a 1990 gsx and im in the process of putting a 91 trans and t case into my car.. when its all said and done what can i do to make high rpm (around redline since im stock) shifting easier??? I know that the early 1g trans are known to be super hard to shift at high rpms and i frequently take my cars to the track every friday to race and dont want to kill my time with slow shifting, or go to shift quick and grind the piss out of the gears..

I was reading a thread where a guy put skateboard bearings or something somewhere that helped with his shifting along with adjusting the linkage??
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/348355-shifter-linkage-adjusters.html

Any help would be greatly appreciated as my car should be done this friday and i can test it out i really want to be able to throw 2nd gear in at about 7k with no trouble and without ruining the trans

I noticed when I switched my stock shift knob for an extreme Psi machined shift knob (weighs idk around 3 lbs) I was able to (throw it faster) the extra weight helped.

Solid bushings throughout the shifter assembly (shifter base, cables bracket, cable ends) will help, but the biggest three things are a lightweight flywheel, good transmission oil, and a transmission with good synchros.

Where can i get the solid bushings at? I'm starting to put the car back together today and id like to grab some if i can.. and how difficult is it to do?

Right away I wouldn't know but you can buy brass or aluminum ones off eg.ay. I bought some aluminum ones, haven't installed yet but seem pretty right.

Why not just do dsmlink and just set up the no lift shift feature.

Cause that totally fixes sloppy shifter bushings, clutch issues, transmission wear, and anything else that causes bad shifting...fanboy...

BTW, you don't need link to do NLTS.

Wouldnt that just raise the risk of grinding gears even more?? As soon as the trans is done the next thing im doing is link v3 and if it wont hurt the trans ill use it forsure

If you set it right and use it correctly you're fine, if you don't your clutch and/or trans is junk.

Well said, finally someone said it before me LOL. Ahghagfcough cough *ceddymods* cough coughaDSGAGHGAG.

haha ya problem with that is i dont have a grand to dish out on a clutch LOL

You'll be dumping more then a grand into a new tranny if you miss a gear due to worn out or crappy parts.
Personally if you don't know the condition of that tranny IE: have someone go through it. I wouldn't be getting all golucky about trying to improve my high rpm shifting. One missed gear and you'll be on here trying to figure out what happened.

In my 90 I had a act2600 street disk, a smaller oem knob and everything else stock (drivetrain) I'd shift at 8k never had a problem. Then I setup my nlts on v3 and 8.5k shifts never failed. Maybe trannnys going out? Ever replace clutch master cylinder/slave?

I'm using the Greddy counterweight. Didn't change much for me but more comfy then stock, atleast for me.
I'm also using a ACT 2600, street disc and stock regrinded flywheel.

The transmission that was in my car was bad and im in the process of putting a new one in now its out of a 91 i bought off my friend and i know shifting them can be sloppy sometimes LOL i plan to get a built trans next summer but for now thats not in the equation im just going to push the stock drivetrain with my 16g for the rest of the summer then do some head work.. new turbo setup and trans in the winter (hopefully)

Good transmission oil
No dragging clutch
Use the skateboard bearings not bushings, they even have them at the hardware store
Weighted shift knob
Shifter base bushings upgrade http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/439826-2g-shifter-base-bushing-install.html
Maybe a short throw shifter

NLTS can be safely used on a daily driver and shaves time off your slips

Thanks for the post man this showed me exactly what i was wondering :applause: but in the how to woulld you put the skateboard bearing in place of where hes using the bushings?

Whoops sorry about that, didn't look to see you were 1G. Here is the shifter base mod which uses bushings no funny buisness with skate bearings :p
Symborski Shifter Kit Install
VFAQ

And this is the skateboard mod for 1G/2G. The bearing code is "608" and measures "A bore of 8mm, an outer diameter of 22mm, and a width of 7mm" (from Wikipedia) They can be had at ACE, TrueValue, any hardware store. Almost every rollerblade, skateboard, scooter uses these bearings so they aren't hard to find

Can't believe no one's mentioend it other than a twin disk, but even lighter 4 and 6 puck disks will let the trans match gear speeds faster than a heavier steet disk

Im with glenn. All the shift mods in the world wont fix a dragging clutch. I use to think dsm transmissions were junk. Then over the years I learned the dsm clutches were junk, not the trans. Plenty of people running 10s on totally stock gearboxes.

Don't know about 6Krpm shifting, but in terms of play, most of mine was in the shifter mechanism, and the rest was in the "shift" bushing at the transmission (the bushing furthest from the engine) -- the "select" bushing was good as new.

My solution was to rebuild the shift mechanism to eliminate all slop and install a single Delrin bushing. Afterward, I had to tune in the "select" cable length in order to get optimal 3rd/4th shift alignment with the shifter neutral position. The remaining "play" is basically the natural travel of the shift levers at the transmission. Having the right transmission gear oil is also important, the synchros need to be able to function smoothly.

Nobody has mentioned making shre the shift cables are adjusted properly. There shoul be a VFAQ write up.

I mentioned the "select" cable length adjustment in the post above yours, the "shift" cable length adjustment should be fine unless you've changed cables -- it just needs to have a comfortable unimpeded fore/aft range of motion at the shifter.
