Brief history. I picked up a 93 2.0 non turbo with a broken timing belt and jacked up head. I have all the aprts and am getting ready to install tonight, but I have a simple question. What all needs to be lined up? I know TDC and the cams and all that, but does the balance shaft need to be aligned somehow? And I know this sounds dumb but what about the idler pully that seems to be free spinning? Thanks in advance.

Keith

Line the cams up with the dowel pins facing UP. The Line the crank to its mark then line the balance shafts up up with their mark. There should be a mark for EVERY SPROCKET. Thats where it can get tricky tou have a 50/50 chance of having it out of time with balance shafts so if it is it will vibrate REALLY bad after 3000 rpm. There is a way to tell if the oil pump is out of time where you take a plug out and insert a screwdriver in so far and if it goes like 10mm then your fine but i have never done that I just got it right every time. Even if you dont it wont hurt anything as long as you drive like a million miles just enough to tell its no that hard to take it apart and rotate the oil pump 180 degrees. Hope that helps you should definitley get a CHILTONS!!

I will help ya out...timing can be a pain in the ass!!

Yes, the balance shaft will have a mark to line up too. u line that and the crank mark up.

No, The idler pully does not need to be aligned. all it does is supports the belt. So, just the crank, balance shafts, oil pump, and the cam shafts need to be alinged.

So if I already put the balance shaft belt on I should probably remove it and re align it? :p Oops. ;) Thanks guys.

So I got it all lined up and ready to go last night, but realized I need a new hydraulic tensioner :( $110 freakin dollars for that thing!!!!!!!!!!!

Because it was removed without putting the pin in to hold it closed, and when we went to press it together and pin it for reinstallation is pushed the bottom out and lost all its tension

Yeah those things are pretty damn tough to press but the key is when you do press it you should go VERY SLOW dont rush otherwise you could ruin it hopefully the next one will work and get the job done.

Bought a new one last night and got it installed. :thumb: Hope to have the car running tonight or tomorrow at the latest. I just paid $2.61 for Diesel fuel in my Dodge Truck, and I want the economy of this car in a bad way ;)
