Ok i gotta 98 N/T with 190,000 miles.... few weeks ago the waterpump went so i replaced that and while i was in there decided since it had so many miles it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the timing belt as well. After doing this it ran a little sputtery for a while like it was missing so i ripped it open again and redid the timing belt, making sure i had it exactly lined up correctly with the notch on the block etc. After this it started running better but still sounds like its missing a little and recently i've gotten the check engine light to come on, i have an ODB II so i checked it and it was p1390 which basically is the timing... is it definetly the timing belt? when i took the harmonic balancer off the first time i used a gear puller cause i couldn't get it off given it had 190,000 on it and chipped some of the teeth a bit and the side of it. could the harmonic balancer being chipped cause me any major problems? i was thinking of replacing that since getting to the timing belt is such a long annoying job. thanks

if you chipped it and theres a reluctor where the damage is the sensor wont be able to read the position of the crank properly and yes that can cause this issue
the reluctor should be on the rear most edge of the timing gear and the sensor has to be within so many thousandths of an inch from the reluctor to pick up the signal otherwise the computer wont interpret what it sees as a crank position and that can cause mis-fires....
most of the time manufacturers make the reluctor one piece with the timing gear and so you'd have to replace it if its damaged......

Can you be a little more clear on what exactly you chipped. It sounds to me like you chipped the crank pully which your calling the harmonic balancer, but it does not have any teeth on it. The part that has teeth is the timing gear which is the part at the bottom that the belt is wrapped around.

maybe teeth wasn't the right terminology, the grooves that the belt run along on the harmonic balancer got chipped.... i'm going to take it out and take a pic to clarify when i get a chance asap

Ok, thats what I figured. That would not cause you to get the code for the timing belt. Go ahead and check out the links that I posted for you, they should help you out.

Ok thanks, i'm going to keep working on it. two questions, how do i check the crank and cam senors to see if their are working properly and given the shape of the balancer do you think it'd be a good idea to replace it reguardless?
