Timing plate orientation?

I've read a lot of threads about people actually putting the timing plate behind the crank pulley on backwards.
I never read which way was actually CORRECT just that they flipped it over and all was good.

Which direction does it go? Does it angle towards the block or angle away from the block??
 
What does that even mean? If I new the "inner portion" I wouldn't be asking. Which side is the INNER PORTION??

See thats where I was confused, I dont have a balance shaft gear on the crank anymore, I bought the 4g61 crank spacer from the colt. They don't have balance shafts apparently.
Less rotating weight on the crank though. Yippie.

Can we get a double sure because now my motor wont turn past a certain point....and before you ask, i've done a TON of these motors and never once have I EVER bent valves due to my mistake. I'm afraid I may have torqued the crank pulley bolt against the valves and not against my engine stand.

Had the wrong plate. This oil pumps from a 90 and I think what was happening is that I was using a 92+ plate. No matter how top dead center I had the piston, the timing plate wouldn't line up, so I used an old one I had laying around and it worked like a dream. And for the record, On this particular engine its angled TOWARDS the block.
 
Glad I checked. Jesus, I was rolling the motor out to the car when I noticed. That would have ended it forever and it would have been sold as a shell. This will be the 4th motor this car has seen.
