OK. I just got done removing the balance shafts, and putting on a new front case. When putting the crank sprocket/timing plate/balance shaft sprocket assembely back I accidently put the timing plate (the small sheet metal plate with a notch in it) on I put it on backwards. This made the timing mark retarded about 45 degrees. When I put the timing belt on, I started turning over the motor by hand just to make sure everything was OK, and I noticed when turning after about 30 degrees I felt something hit! The motor would not move. I immediately knew something was messed up. Then I realized I put the plate on backwards. So I didnt try to force the crank very hard when rotating it, and I took the tension off of the timing belt and set everything back to TDC. So now the timing notch is back in its right place and the timing belt is on good, but Im worried I may have damaged a set of valves? When I felt the obstruction when turning the motor over I stopped IMMEDIATELY and I didnt try to force it to turn further. So what is everyones guess on this one? I will of course do a compression check once I get my new turbo on and everything, but should I ASSUME the valves ARE bent, or maybe no damage has been done???? I am soooo worried...completely my fault..damn.

No u did the right thing actually, which many people miss. I highly doubt you valves are bent. Like you said u stopped when u felt u couldn't turn it further. So yes the piston and the valves did come into conract but they just toutched each other. It take a whole lot of force to bent a valve. So no, your engine is just fine on 99.9999%

i was just doing my timing belt today and i was wondering how much force it would take to bend a valve with moving it by hand, i would imagine it would be quite a bit, as they are fairly thick steel

Dont worry about it at all. As long as you didnt force it your fine. My father and I did the SAME exact thing. We couldnt figure out what it would be hitting. Then we realised it was backwards. We took it off put on right and retimed it. It runs perfect except that my turbo took a shit on me  . Seriously dont worry about it. As long as you werent hitting it as hard as you can your fine. Trust me.

Thanks for everyones advice!!! It sounds like everything should be ok. Really takes a load off my shoulders....would really hate to have to tear apart everything once again
I'm getting ready to strap on a brand new EVO III from SBR along with 650cc's with a SAFC II + a fully ported 2g o2 sensor housing (ported to fit EVO III). Should be pretty nasty :thumb:

yeah, you should be fine.

Although the valves are alot easier to bend than people think. I bent one by dropping it on the floor at work one time. OMG
