timing mark/tdc

the timing mark on my backing plate(behind crank/timing pulley), when aligned, does not make #1 piston TDC, it is like 1 inch off......is this normal....please help asap.......need to get timing belt on tonight

Are you talking about the mark for the ignition timing or the mark on the front case??

Your probly looking at the wrong mark. Do you have a manual or something?? if not go look on vfaq.com and they will tell you they right mark to look at.
