tdc and timing

my timing looks to be off and was wondering if i found tdc with a long screw driver and took it apart and then set the marks to the right points would it run better or would i ned to get a timing light.

Are you referring to ignition timing (timing advance), or mechanical timing (timing belt/cam gear marks)?

mechanical timing what i dont get is how was it running good before .will it run better

You're all confused. Timing light is for the timing of the ignition, not anything mechanical.

The ignition timing should NOT be at TDC. If you grounded the timing pin it should be 5* BTDC.

Set the crank to TDC, and look at the cams. The dowel pins should be up and the timing marks on the cams should be aligned.

You can't accurately find TDC with a screw driver, thats what the timing marks are for.

Well engine timing and ignition timing it completely different if that is what your refering too. To properly set the ignition timing it would be a GREAT idea to redo the timing if you believe it is off or atleast verify that it is off.

You must retime the engine if your marks are off.

OP I don't mean to be rude, but when you're asking if you need to buy a timing light to set your valve timing, you should probably bring the car to a competent DSM shop instead of touching it yourself.

i know cause i rotated the motor more than 6 time which is what it says to doand they dont line up

the cams but heres my ? if i get it to tdc the closes i can and take it apart they put new head gasket and aline all the marks.is that the proceduer to re time it
