Looking for some answers if the timing covers off the gallant vr4 are the same as the eclipse. Both are 6 bolt engines. The reason I ask is I replaced mine for my eclipse with one off the vr4 but noticed when I time the car with the timing cover it doesn't match timing it with the cams. Any insight would be great.

I'm using 1g eclipse timing covers on my gvr4 with no issues. Mine line up perfect, and the new cover matches the old perfect. What are you looking at on the cams? Are the dowels at 12 o'clock and on number 1 tdc?

I originally left off the cover and tried using the cam gears to time the car I've checked timing numerous times this way because I didn't want to put the cover on. The dowels were at 12 o'clock set my timing light to 5 degrees advance lined up the marks on the cams. I could never get my car to idle or run a 100% so I put my cover on the other day so I could take the car to a shop after doing so I checked my timing with the cover and it wasn't even close. I was at maybe 0° maybe worse.

they are exactly the same except for color, gvr-4 is black, and 1g is grey.

is it an original crank pulley ? they do wear out and have known to shift

The crank is not the original it came with the stroker kit from slow boy racing I put in. I just can't seem to figure out why my timing don't come out the same when I time it in the cams versus timing it to the cover. I did think that both the covers were the same as long as it was 6 bolt.

Don't use an adjustable timing light with these cars. A cheaper non-adjustable light is best. The waste spark throws off the adjustable light's timing.

If you do use an adjustable light, make sure that it's set for 0* advance and set the timing to 5* advance on the timing cover.

All I know is the car runs a lot better setting the timing to the cover. I can finally control my idle the car doesn't lope on me. Plus more power sad it's taking me this long to figure it out. So how do other people adjust timing by their cams and not have issues? Could it be because of the different crank?

So after driving the car and the next time I drove it the idle is back up between 1200-1500 rpms. I can easily adjust it back down where it needs to be set to but it doesn't stay at that rpm. My next step will be a boost leak test. Any other suggestions that I might be over looking? Other then that the car drives a lot better.

Thanks again for all the help
