So, I have a '97 GST and I'm timing the engine. I've done all the research and I'm following every step on VFAQ meticulously. I'm still having a problem with the protrusion of the rod on the hydraulic tensioner. It's not too small but far too large. Almost 8mm when it's supposed to be 4.5mm max. I've tried resetting the tensioner and going through all the belt tensioning procedures but I get the same result everytime. Any tips on how to get the protrusion in spec?

When i did mine i just pulled the pin out turned over by hand a few times and that was that, being my first time too.

If its in the car I generally dont measure it, I go by when the grenade pin can be removed easily. That method sets the tension smack dab in the middle of the spec. It's also like 100x easier.

Aren't you supposed to pull the pin and then back off of the tool? And, after you've done that, you apply the torque to the pulley and then torque the pulley down. The rod is just completely extending out of the tensioner.
