I don't feel very confident on doing it my self. So I went to a local mechanic shop and ask for a quote on installing the timing blet, balance shaft blet, tensioner pullys, water pump, and AC,PS,WP belts. I already have the parts, so the quote they gave me was for labor only. $480.00 OMG That just seems ridiculous. I'm going to go around town and see if I can find some one else to do it cheaper. What's a reasonable price for the labor involved here? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Miguel

Do it yourself with the help of a knowlegable partner :thumb:

Practice makes perfect.

I'd love to do it my self. Unfortunately none of my friends are any good at fixing cars. I did a search on "timing belt" and most of the results were from people who did it and their car ended up having problems after the install. If I have no choice, I'll go ahead and give it a try.

Maybe someone from the forum would like to give u a hand.

Hey I don't know if this helps but when I went to get a quote on having my timing belt&balancer done, they told me 3-4 hours. Around here labor is an average $70 an hour so depending on how much labor is on average where you are, it could be about right. Oh yah to the thread starter that is a very clean gst bro :thumb:

by water pump do u mean the pump itself or its belt? if you're replacing the pump that could be where a good chunk of that's coming from.

yea i know, thats what im saying...probably jsut looked it up in the book for flat rate.

Yes, water pump itself is included with all the parts. The mechanic told me that he was just charging me $50.00 for the water pump install. So without the pumpt it would have been $50.00 less. Either way, I'm going to do more research here and just do the install my self. I hope I don't break any thing. Thanks for all the replies.

If I lived around u I'd give u a hand, I love working on dsm's. Good Luck :thumb:

$480 is high although satan will try to rape you for at least $800 if not more. Try and locate local trusted DSM shop, I've seen them range from $275-$350. Good luck.

Wow, I didn't know it was going to be that much. Even 300 seems a lot. I'm going to see if I can find some one who can give me a hand and just do it at home.

If it's any consolation, I was nervous about doing mine the first time, but I took my time, and did it step by step, VERY carefully, and it lasted and NO problems. And the most experience I had before that was just installing lifters in the head...

It's really not hard, unless you are in a hurry or something. I was really scared about it, I'd do a step, check it, and double check again!

But then again, if you haven't really done anything to a motor before I'd be wary too...but what a way to begin ROFL

either way, good luck :thumb:

You are like a nice hour and a half drive away from me, but I will give you hand if you wanted me to. I have no experience working on a 2g though. But I have lots of experience working on cars though (even though I am only 19). So if you want some help hit me up. Again I have never worked on a 2g but with guides on what to do I could give you a hand.

if your afraid of it -- then spending the $$ is well worth the piece of mind the job is done correct with a warrenty on the labor. the price may be alittle higher because you allready got parts, mechanics like to sell the parts to you and mark the price up.

Around here Toronto Ontario Canada they were 200 for labour for BS belt and Timing belt when I called for my 2G I just did it myself and saved the $$$ no problems othen then my crap ass 7bolt crankwaled about 3 months later non timing belt related. ROFL

Coincidence, I just went to the local dealership and got a receipt for the cost.
It was a flat rate of $500 for labor and oem parts. water pump, timimg belt,p/s belt, balancer, coolant. $220 for the labor, usually dealerships rape you but sometimes.... you rape them

BiGGinZ, thanks for the offer. I talked to my cousin yesterday and he told me he would give me a hand. I also found THIS VFAQ here that walks you step by step. So we're going to use that as soon as I get some days off at work. As far as working in my car before, I've installed the injen intake and the dejon ic pipes. As soon as I get some parts in the mail, I'll be installing an injector seal kit to fix my boost leaks along with a walbro 190 pump. I'm not afraid of taking stuff appart. I just don't like to mess with the timing parts of the engine. I'm afraid of the cam gears or crank pully moving and ending up being in different positions when doing the install. I hear that's major damage to your head.

Sounds good. I am sure you will do fine. Good luck.
