I used a 4mm tap to check the gap. Which checked out but I can still put my tension pin back in even after rotating it. It also sat for a day as well. I don't remember before beinging able to do that. Everything is new.
 
just make sure you did your timing belt like this:
1- loosened and removed the tensioner tool that pushes the tensioner bracket.
1a- that in itself should allow your tensioner to extend.
2- use the special tool to tighten the tensioner puller to spec.
3- tighten the tensioner pullet mounting bolt.
DONE

If your autotensioner doesnt push up, it has failed and it shouldnt be used. either its old, or at any point you pushed the piston in to fast causing it to fail. hope this helps
