Raleigh,
Alright we're installing the timing belt on my turbo 2g eclipse and we've hit a road block. Where on the engine is this cylinder block plug that you must remove in order to insert a screwdriver into and strike the counter balance shaft? WE have looked everywhere and can't find it. none of the manuals are helping. Anyone with any info please post asap.

Just make sure that the balance shaft spins the correct way when you point it up and then let go. This is covered in the VFAQ.

It is under the intake manifold on the back of the block. It is kind of hard to get to it with the head on and the air conditioner in, but you can get to it easier from the passanger's side. It is a 14mm bolt that you have to take out before you can stick the screwdriver in there. I've only done it on a 6-bolt, so it may be different...

The pulley is counter weighted and in the VFAQ is shows that if you line up the timing mark on the pulley and let the pulley go, it should turn back just slightly counter clockwise I believe. Dont quote me on the direction, but check the VFAQ. Also it is not a plug, it is a bolt you have to unscrew. You should be able to find it on the back of the block towards the bottom.

that freakin' bolt took me forever to find!

here is a quote from vfaq on watching the pulley:

Simply rotate the mark on the oil pump sprocket until it is pointing straight up, and let it go. If the sprocket rotates towards (counterclockwise) the timing mark on the engine, the oil pump sprocket is aligned correctly. If it rotates away (clockwise) from the mark, spin the sprocket a full turn and test again, and it should properly rotate towards the mark now. Now line the mark on the sprocket back up with the mark on the engine. This avoids having to remove the rear access bolt entirely

i say just pull the damn things out :thumb:

but if they don't just do like they said and just set the pulley up top and let it fall.
