I just did the timing belt. I think it is done right. Very annoying and confusing procedure really stupid design on these engines with the interference and overly complicated belt changing procedures. Also used a 2g belt and hope they are the same as 1g belts..This is in my 91 laser not my 97 talon 2.4.

Anyway the timing belt feels very hot to touch after only a few minutes of the engine running. Its hot out today but still. I have the cover off the timing belt currently. Maybe its getting hot from exhaust leaks from exhaust manifold near it .Is it normal for the timing belt to be really hot?

The car is running good. Can having the power steering belt too tight make the timing belt get hot?

It is easier with experience. But you are right, compared to other engine designs, the 4G63 is more compicated.

I do not know if a 2G belt will work in a 1G, why wouldn't you just get the 1G belt? I think that is a very large risk especially since you do not know for certain if the 2G belt is the same as the 1G.

Think about how tight that belt is. Think about how fast it moves while encased in a plastic and metal box. Think about how hot an engine block gets, which the belt is bolted to. I would say it is not only normal for that belt to be hot, it is expected.

I do not think having the power steering too tight can affect the timing belt as long as the pulley bolts are for the power steering is tight.

I checked belt in buddies 91 and it gets real hot too. So guess thats normal. I did have things set to spec.

I had the nearly new 2g timing belt lying around and heardt hey were the same.
I will check the part numbers or someone can confirm this. I am selling the 91 laser that the belt went into. So not going to spend more money than need be but of coruse want it to last for a future buyer.

I have been driving it quite a bit today and its good so far. Car is smooth and idle is good. It was very choppy before things were not right obviously off a tooth or something as could not set timing to stock specs.it was not even close to stock specs and balancer is not separated ,had that happen on a few dsms in the past.I love my dsms am keeping a 91 race car and my wicked 97 street car but this interference motor stuff is not a good idea and dont' care why they did it,they shouldn't have. Interference engines are the devil!
At least use a timing chain if you must go interference. Or unbreakable belt.I bought kevlar timing for my 91 race talon.I had to go stock 2.4 belt for my 97 since they don't make a kevlar belt for the 2.4 as far as I know.

my whole engine bay is hot as hell....these cars just create loads of underhood heat... everyone i've ever known with one says the same thing...
