doing timing belt on 99 gsx. anyone knows the rotation of the belt. does it turn toward the firewall or toward the front. and second question does it matter. i think i might have to flip the belt around

I dont remember which direction the engine rotates but as far as the direction of the belt going on it doesn't matter as long as all the timing marks line up all is well. Hope this helps.

New belt means you just string it up. If you're putting the same one back on, mark the direction it faced. My best advice for that is get your cam marks straight with the belt draped over the gears, clamp the belt to the exhaust cam, make sure the marks stay straight, pull the belt tight and get the teeth in snug on the intake cam and clamp the belt to that sprocket as well. Then just get it around the idler, pull down tight and slip it around the oil pump sprocket while holding it inline with it's mark and use a small C-clamp to hold it in place also. That way you can be sure the crank mark is dead on with a 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker, pull the belt tight and slip it around the crank. Then once it's up over the tensioner pulley, you can swing the pulley itself out on it's offset bearing and hold some tension on the belt. Once that's done, you can relax some, check everything again, and get the tensioner and tensioner arm set right, pull the tensioner pin, and admire your awesomeness... Then put the rest of the crap back on. :D

Facing the timing case the engine rotates clockwise. As long as the belt you are putting on is new and not inside out you will be fine.

Make sure you tensioner is healthy, the belt is routed properly, the eccentric is oriented per the manual and that you can rotate through a full 720* nice and clean.

If you have balance shafts still, either take them out or make sure they are synchronised properly. Good luck.

I agree with above posters, BUT i just installed a gates belt on a friends 4g and it clearly had arrows pointing in the direction the timing belt *should go* aka clockwise. So i put the arrows the way then engine turns *clockwise*.

Otherwise i always put t-belts on so that i can read the "logo/graphics" when i stand at the driverside side fender, so there is no confusion if the t-belt has to be taken off/put back on.
