heres the deal..my folks are makin me leave the car in texas for my first semester in college while i go to florida so while the car is down here i've decided to go ahead and start getting some serious work done on it so when i get back it will be in good shape

i want to either swap in a 6 bolt or just go ahead and rebuild my 7bolt with forged internals..possibly bore/stroke out the engine(my uncle owns a shop so costs will be low on work) i have about 2500 to spend now and more once i get to florida and start working.

what i want to know is..is it a waste of time to build up the 7bolt and if so where can i get a good 6 bolt and wut all will i need to make the swap work

sorry that was a lot to read..thx for the help

it tough man. Everyone says get a 6 bolt cause of CW but you never know. Its like running around in a rain storm and MAYBE getting struck my lighting there's almost no way of telling if its going to happen. Personally if you are looking for major HP and beefin up internals and all that i would say 6 bolt. If its mostly going to be bolt-ons (turbo etc) then 7 bolt should be fine.

i dont plan on making it a full on drag car but while the engine is out i am going to at least upgrade to a 16 or 20g turbo

well if you have motor out you might as well get OEM t-belt , water pump , tensioner replaced , balance shaft removal, new gaskets and such (makes it easier with engine out of car) then go from there , turbo , injectors, FP 190 or 225 (if 225 i think you need a FPR) SAFC or SAFC II , exhaust (which should be first), ported 02 hosuing or 02 dump, intercooler either FMIC or just upgraded SMIC depending how much farther you want to go from here will decided FM or SM. That should get your car running pretty damn nice.

well thats the thing i dont have the engine out yet bc i'm still driving it until i leave for school in a few weeks. i dont want to spend all of that money on replacing the 7 bolt stuff if a 6 bolt is the better option. but i also dont know how much a 6 bolt is going to run me.
i already have most of the supporting mods for a bigger turbo purchased(boost gauge/controller,tubular o2 housing, FP,injectors,s-afc,) i just lack an IC. i really want to know of a good site/place to look for a good low mileage 6 bolt so i can compare pircing for a rebuild of my 7bolt or just a complete new 6 bolt.

I would buy a stage 1 shortblock 6bolt already built so you will not have any down time but 2500 you can do very little with as far as doing what you what. 3000 is more reaistic because you will probably be replaceing the clutch so thats 300 among other things you run into. A stage 1 head will run you 800 and is a good idea to have on a new short block if you plan on making any power.
You also have to look at your supporting mods for the 16 or 20G once you get the motor done. A nice FMIC will cost you 1000,, exhaust. The list goes on and on. I just recomended this because its beter driving your car than looking at in the grauge because you ran out of money. Think it thew before you commit to it.

How many miles on your engine now? How's the compression? What's your goal? People tend to lean towards a 6 bolt engine .. I personally am running a forged 7 bolt. It's a little more risky I suppose but we'll see what happens. you can find a 6 bolt for like $200. I paid $100 for mine which is sitting on a stand in the garage. :p

Well see what happens WTF? I wouldnt want that motor in my car. No offence just sounds like you are unsure. With all the horror storys out there with 7 bolts why would you spend the time and the money on it

There's a certain way this needs to be looked at. If you are building a race motor ... forged internals ... and you race the car a lot you have to know stuff will break. Especially on dsms. Pulling the motor out and putting in a 6 bolt can be done in a day no problem. I know the motor will be out a few more times because of stupid things. That will happen with anything. If you build a "race motor" and either 1) don't break it ... or 2) don't race it .. then it's not a true race motor. I think I'd blow it up before it had a chance to even start crankwalking anyways ...

The reason for my 6 bolt block is to build a stroker kit. When I first started looking I found a ton of places that sell a 6 bolt stroker kit .. but not a 7. In the meantime I have found some, but for the price I got this engine I can't really complain. :D I'm not unsure of getting crankwalk ... I'm 95% sure I won't have a problem with it. 6 bolts can get it as well although I have to admit I have heard of a lot more 7 bolts getting it. I'm not really worried about it.

Besides : click <- 6 bolt with possibly reoccuring crankwalk after rebuild

well heres the deal i actually have about 2k in hand right now...i only have about a week left of work in texas b4 i move to florida. in college i'm doing work study(for athletics so all i'll be doing is handing out flyers :thumb: ) that will give me 2k a semester and i plan to put that towards my car. then i will also have a job down there so hopefully since i wont be paying insurance/gas i'll be able to use some of that money towards the car if i need to. I have until christmas to get everything done to take the car down to florida for the spring semester. so basically i have 4 months to get everything done and be able to pay for everything.

i want to do this right and not take the cheap route. it wont be a full out drag car, i'm only going with a 16/20g. its gonna be my daily driver down there but i want to know that its going to be strong if i want to get on it sometime(civic on the highway ;) ) also i dont want to have to worry about crankwalk after i've put so much money into the block.

my 7 bolt now has has 120k on it with a transmission and clutch with abour 10k on it. is crankwalk still possible after that many miles? or am i out of the woods.
