i had a ported and polished head put on and 272 cams and ever since i got it back it was running crappy and loud knocking . i went on the crank pulley and made sure the white line was directly up before i took the head off and noticed the valves hit the tops of the pistons very minor damage but the thing was how come the cam gears where lined up and the cracnk was pointing up why was i not in time and hitting my vlaves on the pistons could some one give me a step by step on how to put my head back on so this is in time and i can start my car up with out this loud noise

Is this a 6bolt or 7bolt engine? Did you eliminate the balance shafts?

If its a 7bolt here are the instructions for setting timing:

I am going to assume it is a 7bolt, regardless for both you need to make sure:

- The dowel pins on the cams are up
- The marks on the cams are perfectly alligned
- The crank sprocket timing marks need to be perfectly alligned as well.
- If you havent removed the balance shafts the oil pump sprocket needs to be alligned as well.
- *If you did remove the balance shafts then the oil pump sprocket does not need to be alligned.

Make sure the timing belt doesn't move when you release the tension pin. Also make sure the belt isn't to loose so it jumps timing or too tight that it would break/stretch.

I see too many people rely on the crank pully/timing belt cover when re-timing their motor after a cam install. Save yourself the trouble and spend the extra time to take off the timing belt cover and make 100% sure that your marks are lined up. It's not worth the risk to save a bit of time by not taking it off.

Have you already replaced the valves you bent? If so, follow the directions Redeclipse posted and it should work fine.
