picked up a 98 gst, had no spark, no injector pulse, no fuel pump. Found the crank sensor damaged to crank walk. So I pulled the pan to take a look. This it where it gets interesting... The thrust bearing was in the block, but there was NOT one in the cap, letting the crank grind itself into the leading edge of the bearing. When i pulled the main caps off the other half of the the thrust bearing was on the last cap and rubbing the flywheel, and grinding the crank on the leading edge of the bearing as well. yeah its pretty strange. the motor was just done, had 025 bearings and the look allmost new. they even did ballance shaft removal. (they did block off the oil supply with bearings)
I slipped the thrust bearing out of the block and and compared it to the the one on the cap, they are identical (accept for the wear on the sides).
The main caps are all tied together (one piece) like i have seen on 2g builds on you tube. But neither of the thrust bearings will fit on the cap in the correct spot. it just wont slide on, its like the thrust bearing is 1/8 inch smaller in width or the cap is wide. but it will fit on the last main cap.
My question is... could somebody (the builder) used 2g caps on a 1g motor giving the problem I see? or what was swapped.

I am an ASE tech, so i know a thing or 2 about cars, but untill i can physically see unmolested 1&2g motors in front of me to compare i am at a loss. i know i will have to pull the motor anyway but i dont want to do anything untill i know what is going on with this cluster F.

thanks for any help you can give

Sounds like the wrong bearings were used.

The 2g 7 bolt block ran both styles of main bearings, Looks like 1997 is when they went to the main bearing with thurst washer set up.

6/92-97 Saddle bearing set up. ACL Part number 5M1186
97 up Uses thrust washers. ACL part number 5M1219 for mains, and the thrust washer number is 1T1219

ok, i understand that there are 2 sets of bearings that can be used in this motor. the part that doesn't make sence is the main cap is too wide for the thrust bearing to fit on, but the block is perfect for it to fit in. i dont see how or why there would be 2 different size thrust bearings. i brought the caps/girdle to a friend of mine who has a machine shop and showed him, he was stumped. to him it made no sence. he even called his buddy who has a machine shop, and he was stumped.

ok i got it. they installed a thrust bearing. where there should be thrust washers. the wrong set was installed. thanks for your help.
