Hi I'm doing my clutch and some other maintanence on my 90 TSI AWD talon. I bought an act 2600 kit and it came with a release bearing. I was told to get an OEM mistu throwoutbearing. My question is: is the release bearing the same as the throwout bearing? Also the mitsu one is alot smaller than the ACT one, is this correct? Also, am I correct in installing a mistu OEM one as opposed to the ACT one?

Correct, TOB is the same as clutch release bearing. Correct use the OEM not the ACT. The size really shouldn't be that different, actually they should be almost identical, it's just the material of the sleeve that is different.

Should look like this: http://machv.com/oemclthbetds.html

The reason to use an OEM bearing is because of the "plastic" inner sleeve. ACT has been useing a "plastic" inner sleeve bearing for quite some time now and works fine unless you got a really old ACT clutch kit that has the old style bearing with a metal inner sleeve.

The bearings should be practically identical in size, you need to make sure witchever one you use is the correct one and that the "keeper" clip fits properly. It would suck to have to remove the tranny because you didn't double check it first.

The reason not to use the metal inner sleeve is that it will scar the input shaft to the tranny.

Can you back this up with some evidence/proof or something from ACT? I was under the impression they made a change, and put some plastic in there, but it was still metal under the thin plastic, as opposed to a thick chunk of nylon? I had an ACT bearing awhile ago and looked at it, thought it would be fine since the plastic was on there, but the story I heard is still not to use them because of what I said above. Most of the vendors still have "get an OEM" on their sites too. It could just be a way for them to make another $30 though...:p

I'd like to know for sure before my next clutch swap, as I'd like to not pay for two TOBs!

Both the Mitsubishi and ACT TOB's are plastic sleeved, NSK built parts.

I have a brand new ACT TOB and a new Mitsu TOB sitting in front of me right now on my desk, they are both the exact same unit, w/ the same NSK stampings.

Supposedly ACT started supplying NSK plastic sleeved bearings in all of their newer clutch kits. When I purchased my clutch kit, mine came with a plastic sleeved NSK bearing but I had already purchased an OEM unit for $20 from the dealership.

I just looked around for a bit and could not find any "proof" in writing. However I recently swapped out an ACT clutch on my car that had been there for about 35k with no scarring on the input shaft and the bearing showed no signs of wearing through any "coating".

The only reason for the change was that I had the SBR LSD inserts installed and the tranny checked over so I just decided to put a fresh 2100 in. Although it did not really need it, I just did not want to pull the tranny again any time soon.

I have the ACT one and oem one sitting in front of me and the mitsu one is smaller overall, is this normal?

Word. That's good news. I think the one I had was NSK as well. It would probably have been fine too. Oh well.

About helping the OP...is your TOB an ACT brand or NSK? I'd use the OEM one if you got it from Mitsu and you are sure it's correct. I'd question if you got the right clutch if the TOB is way different...

Can someone please tell me how to post a picture up on here , and does it have to be on a website or can it be a file from my computer, and I will post the 2 TOBs.

Here's the 2 TOBs, the yellow box is ACT and the white box is MITSU.
