Hey what are your thoughts on the Maf-t setup? Blow-thru. My MAS is completely DEAD and this seems like a great upgrade/replacement. A bit pricey tho...are there other paths to take? If so what how do they stack up? Thanks

ok so from reading more and more into it....i need a pocketlogger/PDA along with the MAF-T setup? that puts me into the 800$ range. Am i forgetting anything??

It's pointless. . . Run 2g maf, or speed density. Maft isn't worth the headache to tune.

And seriously, dsmlink would be way less than 800.

Or build a MS system and run speed density for around 400 OR run dsmap for cheaper than that.

You can vent with speed density too btw.

I have a logger set up that cost me a total of 65 bucks. I bought an ebay palm m130 for 45 bucks and got mmcd with a 15 dollar logger cable.

Personally, for 800 bucks, maft is the LAST place i'd look to go. But hey, it's your money.

LOL well thats the way i want to go...so please static share your info with me on what exactly u got..and where if u can

I purchased the MAFT and sensor locally a year or so ago and I have had mixed emotions. My thoughts... a total waste to tune with, go buy an safc or DSM link, but spool up, small boost leak problems (in front of the MAFT), and better flowing intake setup are some great plus sides too. With temperature changes and rainy weather there is a need for change in tune (which in costal SC is quite often). Overall if you are not shooting for over 400 hp I would go 2nd gen MAF and a SAFC w/ logger. BTW I got my (m100) logger off of ebay for $35 shipped and a cable for $15 and with MMCD freeware I had a whole logger setup. So i can vouch for staticbrainwash and the cheap logger too.

My friend just took the maf-t off his car because it's like a finicky woman to tune with. Just do a ds-map setup, super cheap, you'll learn something, and your car will most likely run better than whatever other options you have to choose from.

Hopefully I can be of some help to you. There are a lot of benefits to running the maft whether you are running it on the intake pipe or blow through on the UICP. It is a lot less of a restriction than a typical 1G or 2G MAF. If you run the MAFT original I would definitely recommend running an safc at the very least because the maft is very crude as far as tuning goes. What nobody else has brought up is that there IS a MAFT Gen 2. Here is some info on it:

This new version of the MAF Translator is a dramatic new upgrade from the regular unit. Borrowing technology from the Translator Pro, the Gen 2 now has the ability to adjust fuel + or - 60% in 1/2% steps across 14 RPM bands in 3 different load areas!

We have also added our "wideband tracking" technology to this unit. You can connect any popular wideband that has a 0-5 volt output on the controller and then you can set the desired A/F ratio across the RPM band at WOT. The Gen 2 will then track A/F and automatically adjust the fuel to keep the desired ratio. If the car leans out, the Gen 2 will add fuel and if the car runs rich it will remove fuel.

This model requires that you select the appropriate maf sensor harness to go with the unit.

Basically it not only is more like an afc as far as tuning goes, it also has wideband tracking feature which will at least dial in your cruise AFR's pretty well. You will probably need a pocketlogger to fine tune WOT but as stated before those can be had for cheap. Here is a link to my site which has it on there and you can also see there is a MAF adapter plug you will need as the GEN 2 box itself is universal. Feel free to pm me if you have any other off topic questions.

Where is all this "$800 of a maft and logger" at? I've never seen prices that would add up to that. . .

I ran the maft 2.02 w/ 650cc injectors and a 16G and an 18G. It did just fine. It has only 4 rpm tuning points. Not at all the resolution of an safc. But considering the cost of a 2g maf + SAFC vs. a GM maf + MAFT, the MAFT setup is a bit cheaper. The GM maf can read up to 60 lbs/min and not "blink" the signal. If you're dead set on a Karmen maf, considering the cost of a 2g maf, go EVO maf or 3G maf.

BTW, from my experience (i still run my translator w/ dsmlink), blow though setups are finicky. When setup in draw through, the car tuned like a stock 1g maf.

I currently run the MAFT Gen 1 and an SAFC 2 on my FWD laser. That is my low dollar pavement beater and I added the SAFC later because I am a little finicky with my tuning and I just couldn't get what I wanted out of the MAFT alone. Just so everyone else is on the same page by v2.02 you still mean the original type MAFT and not the GEN 2

Yep, I mean the original maft. 2.02 corrected some of the problems w/ guys getting wrong signals to ghe baro input at the ecu. It IS NOT ideal. But it was not bad for me to tune. W/ just tunerstein, I got my mid and high trims in line. My low trim was up and down. But managed. I still got around 30 mpg highway (when not playing w/ it) and 23 or so town.

Ebay right now has 2g mafs going for $70 and up. I saw one for $50. Get it! SAFC-II is the same price as the original maft on ebay. a GM maf is $30.

Ebay search: 2G MAF -translator

Those are all buy it now items. I wouldn't go over $40 on a bid for a 3" gm MAF. A bit of a difference from the typical 2g maf price. I've seen evo 8 mafs go for under $100.

. . . Am I missing something:confused: ?

The original translator and safc combo is tried and true.

My friend got a 2g maf with a pigtail for 40, had an adapter. Got a chip for his ecu for 150, afc for 80 and used 550's for pretty cheap like 100. Still seems cheaper and easier to tune.

EDIT,

I suppose it comparable, but still. 2g maf is SOOO much easier to tune. And for 800 dollars, seriously, there are MUUUUCH better alternatives.

Yea. That is comparable. And considering that neither an SAFC nor an original maft should be used with injectors larger than 650cc, having a higher reading meter would be pointless. I'll have to concede: a 2g maf is probably the best route for ease of tune and has practically the same capability.

Where's this $800 coming from? Who's selling a maft and who's selling a logger that both would total around $800?

ABSOLUTELY, there is MUCH better engine management for $800. You could get lucky and get a used AEM EMS for that price! This is a 'dsmlink w/ socketed eprom ecu' price. That's choice one. Or, two, you could get an safc and 2g maf (or maft & gm maf) plus an LM-1 wideband w/ the rpm converter and other logging gadgets for about this price. DSMLink is easier to tune, but the second choice gives you a logged wideband input to guarantee the air/fuel tune. Dsmlink is just so stupid easy to tune.
