Hey guys. I've been running my car at wastegate pressure and my car is pretty much stock. It would get a 1 count of knock at certain points in the RPM band, which I didn't think was too big of a deal. I turned up the boost a little to around 13-14 psi or so. It still knocks a small amount, but does this look ok to leave my boost at? I don't have anything to tune with yet, so I can't adjust anything except the boost. :(

EDIT: I was wondering why my timing is being pulled in certain places when I'm only getting 1 count of knock but not in others...I thought that the ECU didn't start pulling timing until it got to 3 counts of knock or so. Anybody?

The 1G ecu pulls 1 degree of timing for ever 2.88 counts of knock. With 1 count of knock it will pull 1/3 degree of timing. Your logger can not read fractions of a degree, so it rounds it out. That's why it seems to pull out 1 degree at 5906 rpm. It was probably at 21.7 degrees of timing, then it pulled .33 degrees out when it saw 1 knock, so the timing went down to 21.4. It's just averaging- don't sweat it.

The ecu will also use less timing at higher airflow, like during spoolup, which occurs around 2500 rpm to 3300rpm in your log.

The stock 1G ecu also pulls timing above 6k rpm. That's the way the timing map is programmed. Yes it sux to see timing drop from 23 to 18 as rpms go up. Your log is almost a perfect copy of the timing advance programmed into the ecu at high load. This is a good reason to get some sort of tuning device. When it comes to tuning devices, more complex=more control but also=more ways to mess it up if you don't know what you're doing.

That's a 3rd gear pull. Is my injector duty a little high for 13-14 psi and stock 450 cc injectors? As for the timing going up to around 24 and then going back down when above 6000 rpm, can a tuning device like a SAFC even change that? I'm thinking of getting a MAF Gen 2 which does basically the same thing as a MAFT and a SAFC in one. It can't control timing though, so will my timing stay the same as it is now?

It's already there. It's the far right column. Just add a % sign and there you go. When I log injector duty cycle with my logger, it also logs the pulse width.

Yes, your timing will stay about the same. There is one thing you can do with a SAFC to help the top end pull. Lean out the 7k rpm/ hi throttle point by about 10% more than the other settings. This usually doesn't change the timing at all, but it keeps the power from dropping off so bad.

I'd really like to be able to be able to adjust timing, but I don't know if I can justify the extra price since in the end I only want to max out the 14b or possibly use an evo III.

Hey! we're back :)
If you don't go bigger than a 16g, then you won't really need to adjust individual timing points by much. It's only when you go bigger that you REALLY need better control of the timing map.
