Thinking about geting a 1st gen for a daily driver

I am looking into maybe getting a 1st gen for a daily driver. I might do small mods and all the free mods nothin to wild. Looking to spend about 4000 on the car. I have a few buddies that have them around here and they are on the bord alot. But is there anything I need to know. I just want something that is gonna handle good and has some good pep.

Look for bad suspensions, body roll during acceleration, I always hate replacing my suspension when I first get a car...

$700 will make 300 horses on the stock motor...

Body work and transmission work are the 2 most expensive things to repair... Engines are cheap and easier to fix... Make sure you get one with a good tranny and "acceptable" body damage...

Throw in a walbro 255 fuel pump, re-wire it
Manual boost gauge tuned for 14 PSI
Fuel cut defender (or a hacked MAF)
2.5 inch exhaust (or 3 inch if you prefer) downpipe is optional on a stock turbo but will help
Boost gauge
and of course an intake

and you're ready to make around 300hp

uness it is a 4g37! A DL! =)....they are decent Daily Drivers but my dl sucks in winer abs =/ but its a decent car, i am planning to get a 2G AWD TSi Talon next year.

i just bought my 93 tsi fwd 3 weeks ago for a DD...right now i'm having a problem with the clutch system, but other than that its a great car.

300 hp sounds a little high. At 14 psi? I don't think so. These cars are cheap to make fast, but not that cheap to make that fast.

you won't like it when you can't see at night. i personally like the 92-94's especially the talons, because the rears own all

i can see perfectly fine at night, dont talk about what you know nothing about. most people call me on my cell to tell me to turn my brights off, which i never have to use btw. I dunno if my lights are stock or not, but they are bright as ever, and the rest of the car was stock when i bought it, so i doubt the lights are far from being stock.

and if you look at my rear, i think youll understand that it is actually us 1ga owners who have the best rear end.

I bought my 1g for $400, a turn of the CAS and it was running perfectly. That girls dad was fairly pissed. I havent had a problem out of it. It just has body damage. Only have intake and exhaust(or lack there of).

To contribute to the actual thread, though...
1Gs can make reliable daily drivers if you keep up with the routine maintenance. Look into changing the belts as soon as you buy the car (unless you have receipts for recent installation). Don't ever go by what the previous owner "said" they had replaced, looked at, fixed, etc.
But that's a given for any 15-16 year old car, I guess.

Of course, I would go AWD if I was you, but that's just me.....

AWD Talons are really nice to go with. I just bought mine a few months ago for a DD. I really enjoy everything about it. But do change all belts and check if recalls are done. As I was driving home from buying the car my transfer case locked up as I was going 70. Had it towed to the dealer who replaced it for free. And recently I had a balance shaft belt break on me. I was told that the belts were changed "recently," so change them unless receipts proved "recently." Mechanic messed up my new auto-tensioner and now its not such a daily driver. But Getting new valves, head gasket, and valve gasket for free.

Thinks guys. Yeah i up keep every car I own its easy to just up keep the car then let things go and then later on have more problems..

$4K should be easy. You can get a nice GSX/TSI for 2-3 grand. Keep the rest as maintenance/mod money and you should be rolling a pretty reliable car.

A 1g is great for a daily driver but be prepared to spend a lot of time on it. Having a 1g is like having a kid!

I think all cars are like that . Everyone I have had I have had to do things to make it better are just normal up keep.
