Thinking about buying a awd 1st gen gsx that wont go into gear OPINIONS???

im thinking about trading my 2000 cr 250 for a 1st gen gsx , it has some nice modes such as 550s walpro, 255, 3inch exhaust, fmic, gm maf but he says it wont go into gear when its running it will grind, but when the car is off it will go through all the gears, he also said it could be started up in gear, any ideas of what could be wrong??? bad tranny? or what?? good deal or no ??

I'd check the linkage first.

If it is a trans, you can easily get a used one, install it and have fun!

Or if there is enough nice parts on it, you can always part it out

its sounds to me like a bad slave or master cyl any ideas??

If it goes into gear with it off and can drive, then the trans should be alright, I would check the slave and master cylinders, more than likely has air and needs to be bleed, and or replaced.

i was reading that it might be the shift fork ?? but it wouldnt shift right when its off either if that was the case correct???

This is exactly how I got my first DSM. The owner said the trans was shot, but I noticed no fluid in the resevoir. So I said, "yeah, transmission is definitely shot, It will cost about 3k to rebuild it....."

He dropped the price 2k, and I got it for 500 bucks.

so thats another poss, im just trying to go the route so that i wont have to take the tranny off, any other possibilties?

Same thing happened when the fingers on my pressure plate fell off and the clutch decided to go "nom nom nom" with them. Put a new clutch in, adjusted the pedal, good as new.

how much is it? if its the trans sned it to the jacks and get it rebuilt for $800 and replace the master and slave and your good to go.. but like others said above . try the little stuff first.. also check the fluid in the tranny. .

There are a few possibilities on what it could be. Most likely the clutch is busted, but it could be as simple as low fluid in the master, or loose bellhousing bolts. It's unlikely the transmission is shot, but you might have to pull it to fix the problem. You want me to buy it?
