Hey there joined up to ask a few quick questions if i could there is a 1991 Eagle Talon TSI not sure if its AWD or not yet but it has just been rebuilt and has a few mods nothing to big but i am just curious as to how well made these things are my dad is a mechanic of 36 years and claims that they are obsolete no name pieces of garbage but if that was the case why is there such a large fan base? So tell me the honest truth are they ok cars?

If you take care of them, they will take care of you.

Put maintenance as a major priority then mod and so forth.

Always ask for receipts for any work done.

Other then that, it's just like a regular car like every other car.

Iif he thinks that then I. Would have to say that your dad is rather biases, they are great cars if you take care of them, just like most other cars can be.

I mean no disrespect to your dad but I would say that after being a mechanic for that long he is most likely very biases to older domestic vehicles.

As far as these being good cars, mine ran for 3k miles on 3 cylinders with my wife driving, one of the plugs was cross-threaded by the previous owner and blew the threads on her, it still ran like a champ even with that problem, and now I'm waiting for my tax refund to come in so I can rebuild my engine, even at half compression I'm still able to drive it daily and drop your average idiot in a honda or scion at roughly 80lbs of compression.
These cars are great, just keep your timing belt changed at 60k or so and the oil clean and the car will last longer than most.

Think about it this way, they require more maintainence than a chevy 350 block but less than any rx-7

Longer the most? Lol your pushing the envelope a little. They are great cars, i love them to death Haha. But they arent the BEST for reliability, although they can be.

Your Dad seems to be a DSM Hater :p

Ask for receipts if he can't come up with them 1: The owner is a BS'er and is lying about everything 2: Offer him a lower price and take a risk.

But its looks like it has potential to become a nice 1g with some work.

I would see if he is willing to take 2300 at most, that's a nicer price, its like a guy trying to sell a 97 spyder with the turbo setup torn out and front bumper off asking 2800 in my area, its just not quite worth spending that much to get a project.

I have a friend pushing 370,xxx miles on his 95 GSX with 900 whp. If you take care of it the car will last, and that number is on his stock 4g63 block

Yea my father is a HUGE DSM hater he is a big Toyota/Lexus fan :p Another question how much boost can i pull out of the motor if it is a brand new rebuild?

Like stated above ask for receipts of the work done. But i would start at 2300. Its a clean Dsm though :)

Im pretty sure its 16 pounds with stock fuel pump and injecters. But i wouldnt be boosting till you read up a little more on here. You can learn a lot by reading Haha sounds crazy but its true LOL. Theres more involved then just turning up the boost.

Techs lose theirs jobs since DSM owners are their own techs :D

Well check the 1g and offer a price and if the owner doesn't bite wait for another one to join the market :thumb:

Having a few miles on a rebuild is usually a good sign, although 2,000 still isn't many..

Remember, they're selling it for a reason (a car can be transported) so take your time examining it, be sure to exhaust the seller with questions. Assume nothing, do your homework, and bring your dad the mechanic along.

newbie here.. what's the most you'd say for a 90-91 talon tsi with a small 16g, 2g mani, and fmic?

That depends entirely on the condition of the car.
Having a 16G, FMIC, and 2g intake manifold, I would personally say no more than $2000, but I'm something of a penny pincher when it comes to cars...
