My good friend is selling me his stock 1999 Eclipse GST 5-speed with 70,000 miles for $6000. He just replaced the timing belt at 60k miles and he plans to take it in for maintenance this month. I plan on keeping this car stock for a couple of years while I finish up college and also I need this car to be very reliable because I can't afford to be fixing tiny problems here and there. I'm just wondering if there is anything out to watch out for besides the crankwalk problem when inspecting the car. Also how good of a deal am I getting? I thought this was a pretty great bargain so thats why I'm picking it up. I've also noticed that a lot of gst owners paid a lot more for their cars.

Thanks guys.

:thumb: 6 years old with 70 thou on it. sounds like a pretty decent deal to me, specially with the low miles. Make sure that its not leaking oil! and they are very reliable till you start moding them(if done wrong)

I just bought my GS-T last month and I am 100% sure it was the right decision. People are iffy on the reliablity of DSM's but hey the car has been running in top condition. If you take car of your car, you should really have no problem and you won't be dissipointed by its performance either. :thumb: Have fun blowing by civics and camaros. :dsm:

I have a GST its one of the best cars I have owned. Its so awesome for highway pulls or anything from a roll, but when you get from a stop the AWD does have its advantages. A gst is pretty good once you get rid of the wheel hop tho.

OK low miles are good and I'm not trying to burst anyones bubble but.

#1 if you want a reliable car and thats the only car you have a dsm is not the best choice.
#2 there are 2g gst cars all over everwhere with six bolt swaps for way less. which would bring be to my other point if i wouldn't get - points for it. how experienced are you with dsm.
#3 if your not experienced with dsm then do a search for something called crank walk.

it sounds like a decent deal but I own dsms and there great cars. but don't expect it to be 96 Honda civic dependable. the engines run hot and are quirky.

I'm just playing devils advocate so don't start jumping my crap. but do a search for other 2gs and see what you can find. i would recommend one with a swap. but the low miles on this car does tell you that you could have quite some time with it. or not. I'm kinda bitter about my 2g and will probably never own one again. I own a 1g though and have 158k on it, it has diecent compression and runs good. the only problems Ive had with it is the alternator went out and some retard decided that when the monster tach was removed b4 i bought it that they would just leave the wire to ground out my cas. anywho good luck with whatever you decision is.

but it still sounds like a diecent deal. just research dsms before you buy one.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I have read what crank walking is all about and I will do my best to check for it when I test drive it. I know the motor will run hot (all turbo cars run super hot) so I will switch out all the fluids (oil, tranny, brake, coolant additive) to probably Royal Purple or Redline. I know my buddy has taken care of his DSM but I want this car to last as long as possible because I would really like to turn it into a project once I finish w/college. I will also have a mech check everything out to see if anything needs to be replaced.
