The past few days ive been hearing a weird noise when putting my car in reverse or drive, and ive been experiencing weird shifts from 1st to 2nd, it would shift at high line pressure. Today i checked my fluid and it was full, so i went to go pick up my kid from day care. Got on the highway and got on it a bit, trans downshifted and slipped for a split second. I continued driving and got on it again, this time the car downshifted and immediately hit the rev limiter. I let off the throttle and it shifted into 3rd then 4th no problem. Parked the car and left it running, picked my kid up and put it in drive, no problem. it went to shift into 3rd and basically slipped really bad and just hit the rev limiter. pulled over, put it into 1st, started driving, it was fine, shifted into second, it was fine, switched to drive and it hit the rev limiter. So now, i have no reverse, and no driving gears. If i let the car sit and cool down, it shifts fine for about 2 minutes into every gear then loses all gears. Is this a trans pump, the converter, or the tcu?

I disconnected the tcu and it didnt shift at all either, i have a homemade shift box and it didnt make a difference. I also pulled the pan off, found a magnet broken into 4 pieces, and quite a bit of metal. the fluid still has a red tint to it, but smells like its burnt.

Dont quote me on this but usually when the tranny fluid smells burnt its the clutch packs that are worn and are slipping. I really dont know much about auto trannys to many things to go wrong. Also if it revs but doesnt move its bc fluid isnt being transferred to the torque converter. Again dont have much experience with the auto tranny so hopefully helps a little.
 
congrats, you need a rebuild. youre TC is fried and your clutches are too. i bet your trans cooler and pump are shot as well.

looks like it may have started slipping, then cooked the fluid, or lost internal pressure (pump or a seal went bad) and the fluid wasnt being cooled. then your TC got hot, expanded and started eating itself. same with your pump with all the debris going through it. your clutch packs went somewhere in the mix.

time for a BA rebuild and nice launches.

edit: could also have a shot planetary gear set. buddies truck acted the same way when his trans went out this last time (06 f150) and his planetary gear set was cracked and coming apart.
