things to look for on a 6-bolt

you actually get to go look at the engine before you buy? thats cool! Things to look for hmmmmm
Lets see here......
1. Check turbo for exessive shaft play. Also some jdm's came w/ a bigger turbo but not sure which ones so maybe someone else can help me out on that one.
2. Check injectors for any gas rough gas leaks. Also check if they are yellow or blue top injectors. some jdm 4g63's had 510cc yellow top injectors compared to 450cc blue top injectors that everyone has. these yellow tops are rare, but there out there.
3. check out all visible gaskets for and oil leaks and things to that nature.
4. remove the oil fill cap and check conidition and viscosity of oil. also look really close and check out the color of the metal in the head while looking thru the oil fil cap. If the engine has only 30,000 to 50,000 miles on it like most jdm places say they do, then the color of the metal should be pretty new looking like a shiny silver color. But if it has exesive miles on it the color of the metal will be a dull yellowish brown color, you may want to keep looking depending on how dark the color is.
5. Check exhast manifold for any cracks or broken studs.
6. If possible, check the compression somehow if you can.
7. Make sure its a six bolt!
8. Visually check the entire longblock over very well. sniff, scratch, do whatever but check it very well, its not everyday you get to check out a jdm motor before you buy.
9. ask about any available warranties w/ purchase.
10. Check out tranny very well to, if it comes w/ tranny. If it comes w/ a tranny, see if its the notorious AWD/FWD switchable tranny, found only in the VR4's.
11. Ask them if you can remove the timing belt cover, and check condition of timing and balance shaft belt, the condition of these belt and pulleys can tell you alot about the engine, youll see what i mean just by looking at them. If you do buy it, make sure to do a new timing belt, balance shaft belt, bolt pulley, and hydaulic tensioner, even if they say its a new belt just do it to be safe.
Im sure theres some other things to check out, maybe other people can help out too, but this should give you a good place to start w/ thouroghly checking the engine over. BTW, if your feeling generous, this probly deserves a few rep points.......plz.

I bought a motor for my civic at one of those places. They let me pick from 20 of them. Other than what he said, I'd just pick the cleanest one, mine looks brand new and who knows it could be!
