Thanks for all the responses. I appreciate it. I'm still debating on whether or not I'll jump on it, but I think I'mma take it. I just have to figure out where I'm gonna keep all these cars (this will be #4) LOL...

...and I'm not quite sure that's all it needs. So far my biggest concern is the coolant leak. The owner says it's driveable, but he wouldn't recommend it. Either way, I stay 5 minutes from where the car is located. Maybe I can get it to limp to my house...

So I have a chance to buy a 95 GST that was stolen and recovered, then fixed, for 2100 from a friend. The only thing that makes me nervous is that he says it has balance shaft knock, which i've confirmed from this site and i've heard it to confirm it. He says he's done messing with it and doesn't want to fix it and make a few hundred dollars more. I dont know him THAT well but i know him. I've talk to his dad about it, as a seasoned mechanic he tells me the same thing. I'm really trying not to get into anything too extensive since i've already got another project.

It needs paint, has a freshly painted 97 front bumper, act2600, has balance shaft knock(known for sure...), just over 100k on the clock, needs tires soon. The interior is in pretty damn good shape, its missing some clips on the stock body kit, has a non recirculated bov and an exhaust. It also has a new timing belt.... I quickly checked for C/W and it didn't show signs but i'm going to go back and double check again this weekend. The car stalls when I come to a stop after its warmed up a bit but I've yet to check for boost leaks, vacuum leaks and all the other normal maintenance.

My friend went and took a look at it and since he's a car salesman with Zero mechanical inclination he told me not to do it because he's weary since we see a lot of the crap cars roll in.... He's very good at his job and he's putting doubt into my head. I work with him selling cars so i'm a little more resistant to his word than most.

I'm not sure what to do. I thought that was a pretty rad price and since the tranny's good and I have most of the parts to convert over to a 6 bolt, if anything went wrong I'd be ok if I just found a shortblock.

I wanted to give you guys a chance to guide me here since i'm a bit nervous. The most i've paid for a dsm is 300 bucks and this is the most i've shelled out. I'm going to ask some local guys here if they know anything about the car.

Let me know what you guys think i'm very anxious to sign the papers and check out my ONLY 2g ;)

Any insight is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

body is in semi decent condition. Missing front bumper and driver's side door handle. The engine has 111k miles on it. It starts and runs, but the alternator connection isn't working (so the battery never charges i guess) and the intercooler tube to the throttle body is missing.

...and it's a 5 spd...

No too many problems. Just not worth it. You can find a 2g that is in pretty decent condition for 3500 if you are lucky. I would suggest looking for a shell and dropping an engine in, it just seems like a better choice if you are willing to work on it.

well, I was thinking maybe about keeping my 96 RS as my show DSM and of course making the TSI my go DSM. I'll sell my ugly '89 corolla sedan and keep my '04 taurus as my daily driver and trade it for a nicer d.d. down the road...

Well i dont have a garage but i am willing to work on it... I have the tools and the knowledge but no garage.
I didn't go out looking for a 2g i just stumbled across this... The guys letting me make interest free payments. Oh yeah its a 5 speed with a super short shifter that I like... I could post pictures....

If this is going to be your main project then I say go for it, if you already have a project car I woudn't.

We all know that no matter what DSMs will turn into project cars... :)

Well I've already got a project car and I've actually got a reliable daily driver that just happens to be a 91 gsx. I plan on adding a few simple bolt ons and daily drive it or sell it. I dont really feel the need to modify this one a whole lot because its fwd:p
It wouldn't hurt to save my 91 for when the 95 breaks, if it does.
Nothing like a backup daily driver for your daily driver...

ok well my talon is dead (ill just leave it at that) so im buying another dsm from craigslist for 1k now my question is is it worth it bassed on what the guy told me (going to go check it outh this weekend)

the goods.
91 eclipse gst (fwd turbo)
manual
exterior is in decent shape
the motor runs
rebuild head 16,000 miles ago
no boost leaks (wont stop me from running my own tests)
never been moded
passes smog and registered
and mods from talon can and will be transfered to eclipse(if i buy it)
the guy is the 2nd owner

the bad.
bad clutch probably destroyed according to the guy(main reason im getting it so cheap)
cant test drive obviously
no back seats (have some from the talon should fit)
possibly bad rings (said it smoked black a little before clutch went bad)
car dose not have plates and has non operational title
have to drive 100 miles to see the car and possibly tow it
im on a real tight budget

other than that the list might grow but only time will tell anyways just wanted some feedback and possible tips on what to look for when i go to check the car out any tips will help thanks :dsm:

If you have the mechanical know how to fix the car, then go for it. Problem is, if you don't have the money to fix it, it's kind of pointless to make the purchase, as all it's going to do is sit around like your current 'dead' Talon.

i can do the clutch job (oh i forgot to mention i have my act clutch from my old talon ready to go in as a replacement so no biggie on the clutch) but its just the black smoke thats concerning me... registration might be a pain just wish i knew what the costs might be guess ill make some calls tommorow

How much do you think I can ask for my 1995 GSX?

Engine:
6 bolt, Turbonetics e-manifold, rebuilt T04E 57 trim, 3" O2 elim downpipe, 3" exhaust w/hi-flow cat, Greddy FMIC, MBC, Walbro 190lph, Greddy BOV, FPR, DSMlink, 1G intake, 1G TB, 1G head, Poly motor mounts, Tial 38mm WG, ACT 2600 clutch, Fidanza flywheel.

Interior:
Autometer boost, egt, AFR gauge

Exterior:

18" wheels with Yokahama Prada Spec 2's (95% left on front tires), full 97 conversion

The only things needed are rear tires & to have 3 holes in the trunk filled (from the removal of the 2ga spoiler).
